Ok i'm the new owner of an 87 2.9 ford ranger 4x2 with a 3' inch body lift that has had some abuse over the time and am probably gonna have a few questions in the future.
For now i got 2:
1) How to remove govenor/limiter that wont let me exceed 55mph.
2) I think its called a syncronizer? You know when your stings not defined anymore and every gear feels like neutral(can go side to side). Well i heard i need a new syncronizer(sp?). Whats the price and how hard is it to fix?
Thanks for any info and i hope this is the right section for the post.
Theres no such thing -that I know of- as a 55 MPH governor. A clogged cat or fuel filter can cause that though.
I'd change the fuel filter & if it still wont run over 55 pull the codes & test for a clogged cat with a vacuum gauge.
Are you saying this is a manual trans & the gear shift lever is sloppy??? If it is pull it & check for a missing teflon ball on the end of it.
Sorry about not being too well educated on the topic. I haven't personally driven the truck 55 yet as I dont have the registration and everything. Its just that when the guy I bought it from drove it it seemed as if it wasn't allowed to exceed 55. The speedo hit 55 and unless he just caught himself giong tht fast and stopped accelerating it had a limiter or something keeping it from going over 55. I'll check your suggestion though.
Yeah i guess you can say its sloppy. Like if your hands on the shifter/stick and your in first it isnt defined and held in place like it would be and you have to "find" the gears because you can't "feel" them.
Once again sorry for the uneducated terms and such . This is my first vehicle to my name and its a learning experience.
You're doing fine explaining it & i've had the same problem with the shift lever on my 87 2.9. The last time that the plastic ball on the end of the shift lever broke i was doing about 35 MPH & i heard a bang & felt the truck jerk. That was the ball falling into the transmission & getting chewed up between the gears.
Replacing the lever is easy, just 4 bolts to remoe & lift the lever out. But the miserable lever is about 60 bucks at the dealer. If you're lucky you might find one at a wrecking yard. Congrats on the new truck & good luck with it.
