My battery died in my 86 f250 with a 5.0, so i jumped it from my brothers car . After it started i heard a grinding sound. The sound didnt change when i pushed the clutch in, but i had to shut it off to disconect the jumper cables and move my brothers car back. Then i started it up, and was trying to listen where it was coming from and i see blue smoke coming from the bellhousing!! the sound is most disctintive from the rear of the engine by the tranny. I'm thinking either my clutch blew up, or my starter motor is hung out. would the starter motor cause smoke if it was stuck out? it wasnt alot and it was just like seeping from the bellhousing.
Hopefully this isnt anything in the engine either...
if you have any imput as to what it may be please lmk some things i can check!
Sounds to me like your starter is hung in the open position not sure why .This usually happens if your vehicle is hard to start or if the starter keeps running your battery dead , do to the starter being worn or misaligned to the front of the starter . dont feel to bad mine cracked the front of the starter housing .told me something was amis. I even put in a good battery no trouble till about the third start and eer eeer thuimp thump replaced the starter charged up the battery no more problem go figure
it is in sync with the engine, if you rev it it goes up, when you turn it off it goes off. but what would explain the bluish smoke coming from the bell housing?
Ryan if the starter is stuck open it is being driven by the flywheel not the clutch so if the engine is turning the flywheel is turning and if the starter is stuck in the open position the flywheel is driving the starter its suppose to be the other way around and when it startes you demagnatize the starter and the bendix goes back to the nutral position not so in your case. could be the throw out bearing but highley unlikely
How can i test that the starter motor is engaging. If i turned the key to start while the engine is running, that make it grind right. If it isnt the starter, and i do this would it damage anything?
NOW NOW NOW if you start the engine and now it is running right RIGHT it idles at around 600 650 rpm and your going to WHAT start the starter?????from a dead stop your going to try and engage the starter into the flywheel while its spinning 600 plus RPM s NO NO NO BIG CRUNCH you should be able to tear at least 5 teeth off of the flywheel or maybe a couple off the starter bendex engagement teeth or better still tear the starter snout off of the starter or at least crack it. If when you shut off the engine and you are able to start the engine again only means that when you shut the engine off that the bendex came out of engagement with the flywheel. So what you have to do is to prove that it is working right and that is to bench test the starter. Get someone with some experience like a starter repair shop or alternator shop to check your starter out. They will do a load test and also check out your bendex and your selinoid if you take that in as well. For me to tell you how to do a bench test would only incriminate me and maybe hurt you and we dont want that now do we. These starters have so much torque twist to them they could literely tear up anything that gets in its way inluding a flywhell.

haha, allright i wont do that. But your saying that if i can restart the engine, then the gear is disengaeing? because when i shut down the engine i hear the gears/noise slow down with it. I'll pull the starter out later today after work and take a look and see if the gear is stuck out or anything else crazy is going on in there.
Hears the scoop on that Ryan Its no dang good the way it is and its only going to get worse When you take the starter out . First disconect the negitive on the battery FIRST. Then for safety disconect the possitive. When you get the starter out put the starter on a bench or chair and take a screwdriver and see if you can force the teeth in the starter out toward the snout of the starter if it springs back then thats ok but if it stays out BInGO thats the problem its spring loaded and suppose to return to a nuteral position when the bendix is not activated..Check see if all the teeth are there or are any missing .Next take a large screwdriver and then advance the flywheel making sure that all the teeth are there none missing. Then take the starter to a reliable shop and have them check the starter. You may also need a shim on this starter i didnt take it appart so i dont know mine use to make a crazy noise and was hard to start I shimnmed mine and now it works just fine good luck (vette59)

If the gear was out all the way that indicates to me that either your bendix stuck in the open position and burned out or the lever arm that actuates the gear through the electro magnet cellinoid in the bendix is broken or cracked and yes the best thing is to go to the wreckers and get a used one or if you have the cash get a new one. hope you get it straight let me know ps yes i like your stepside I have 3 of them one no 1 and two no 3s want to chop the top off of one of them happy thanksgiving and have a great day
