ok im having a huge problem,my truck will not start...ok wut controlls the nuetral safety switch on the tranny???coming out of the kkey ignition there is a unconnected wire that is brown and goes through the fire wall, does this possibly go to the tranny?
plz i need help
The nutral safety switch is on the lower part of the steering column. Between the steering column and the firewall. I am not sure about the brown wire. Hope that helps.
I am having a similar problem with my 69 f100 ranger. I replaced the ignition switch today but no luck, the whole truck is dead. going crazy trying to find the problem. The neutral safty switch is on the column as stated but I don't have any wires going to my tranny. I bet it has nothing to do with the neurtal position. You can move the column swithch with your finger as you hold the key in start position (CAUTION: BE DARN SURE THE TRUCK IS NOT IN GEAR WHEN YOU DO THIS!) my column shifter broke and disabled the little actuator that moves this switch arm. check it out!
my understanding is there should not be a wire to the tranny. It just enables the ignition to work depending on the position it is in by the shifter in the column. So it is like a cut off switch. Has nothing to do with what mechanical gear the tranny is in its self. You might try replacing the switch. On my old 72 3/4 ton someone had put a jumper wire in the switch itself to make it work.
ok,i put in a new:
wire to my starter, cellinoid, battery, new ignition, and i still have nothing, and i realy should have pointed out the fact that i have a 72 swb 302 c4 combo, and also have mentioned this ,there is NO power goin anywhere past the starter and it seems to stop at the sellinoid
As far as the neutral switch. Did you try moving it with your hand? The neutral switch has no connector whatsoever to the tranny. You can put the truck in park and kneel down outside the drivers side door and start the car with your right hand while you slightly adjust the neutral switch back and forth with your fingers until you get it into the right position. It only needs to go in about 1/2 inch from the left side to start. I took two of these apart this weekend. On the inside is a spring that loads the switch and there are 2 brass ball bearings that slide back and forth and connect the wires on the backside of the switch. Two brass bearings because one is for the neutral switch and the other is for the reverse lights. The bearings on both switches had a v-shaped groove worn into them. It is possible that your switch is bad. You can bypass it on the back by just connecting the two wires that are for the neutral switch. I can't remember what two they are though.
Another possibilty could be your grounds. Nothing works without a good ground. Especially if you say it doesn't get past the starter. If it gets to your starter but not past then something isn't connected past the starter. I've been amazed over the years at how many strange electrical problems are due to dirty grounds. Get yourself a wire brush and start cleaning connections. Start with the battery. Clean the terminals and the cable ends. Both ends of both cables and the steel and bold the cable ends bolt to. Pull the harness plug out of the back of the ignition switch and blow all the dust out. brush anything that looks like it's oxidized. If the copper ends have some green stuff built up on them make sure to brush that junk off. Even if this doesn't solve your problems then you can rule out the grounds.
I'm not as experienced as you guys but Ihave had the same problem this week. I agree that the grounds are 70% of most problems like this. I cleaned all the connections i could find, then discovered that a wire going into the connector (part of the harness) that connects into the ignition switch has a bad or loose connection within the plug. I temporarily got a good connection and the truck runs better(electrically) than ever. But where do you find that plug on the wiring harness? all the parts people just give me a blank stare. check all your connections it cant hurt to service them.

The brown wire is for the CHIMES sound. Some disconnect it at the column so as not to have to hear the little BUGGER.
