98 explorer tranny

anyone know what tranny a automatic 2wd eb explorer has? im thinking about buying a 98 with tranny problems and a trashed interior.. and several other problems, but runs ok.. what mpg these get around town?

anyone know what a used good trans or rebuild goes for on these?

by the way its the v8 5.0 engine

I think the 5.0 uses the 4R70W trans. Searching for them, I find $700 or so for a rebuild, $1900 for a B&M street/strip.

Originally rated 14/19, 16 combined, the revised rating is 12/17, 14 combined. That sounds about right.

well it drives around good in reverse and you can feel it pulling in forwards a little but not much, i think its low on fluid but might be wore out.

well trans filter and fuild change, no different!

what other vehicles can i get this transmission out of, i believe its a 4r70W and its 2wd

Since Ford decided not to allow band adjustment on most of their transmissions you have very few options. You can check transmission pressures but you are probably looking at rebuild or replace.

I would not be surprized to find that almost all of the 4R70s from 93 and up to 98 or newer would fit. I'm pretty sure the bolt pattern is the same. You should take the plate that goes between the engine and trans and compare to be sure. There are also some differences in the wire harness so you will need to check the pin out and compare that too.
