OK guys. . .I gave my '78 F150 Supercab its semi-annual bath yesterday, and I crawled under it just to check things out. I noticed that the rear output shaft seal on the xfer case was leaking. Now, I've rebuilt Ford engines and transmissions, but I've never touched a xfer case. Is this seal something I can change out without dropping the case to the ground? Also, can I go purchase a seal, or will I need to buy an entire overhaul kit? What is involved with changing out this seal? As I said, I've never seen a case taken apart.
Who makes a good tech manual (Haynes, Chilton, etc) for this case?
easy job just pull the drivline and remove the yoke and pry the seal out and put the new one in.take ya about 30-40 min.use a big socket to help drive the new seal home.
Wizzard is correct, no need to pull the case. Read this thread from a while back as these guys had really good tips for me on replacing seals. Be careful with them because they are fragile: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...d.php?t=204200
Haynes or Chiltons, hmmmm. Seems like the newer they are, the more they tell you "not user serviceable".
My preference runs to Haynes, my advice is to check the local library. The bigger your library, the better your selection. My last visit (first since we moved here) turned up an online database, and catalog for all the other branches in this county.
A few years ago, I was looking for a wiring diagram niether publisher had. Out of frustration I walked into the Denver Public Library. I had my schematic photocopied in less than ten minutes. It took another hour to look over the shelves filled with different titles from publishers I never heard of before. Talk about a gearhead heaven!
Haynes is always my manual of choice (can't makes heads or tails of a Chiltons manual). They give you a complete breakdown of everything you need to know for rebuilding the NP205, NP203, and manual transmissions as well. The only thing they don't get into is the rebuilding of an auto tranny.
I have an older Haynes manual, but it is specifically vague as far as the xfer case goes. I think I will try what Wizzard351 said and change the seal without dropping the case. Thanks for all the help guys.
