This is nothing but a guess but.. I wonder if the switch changes the relief valve setting? More pressure would give a quicker response, less pressure would be slower.
My 97 Lincoln Town car has that. It is called an electronic variable orfice system (EVO). It gives minimum assist at higher speeds when lot of power is not necessary and full assist during evasive maneuvers and at low speed like for parking efforts. There is an adjustment control on the dash for the minimum and maximum assist settings.
depends on how you want to adjust it... if you want to tighten the steering up go the the steering box under the hood and loosen the nut on the top of it... while holding the nut stready with the box end of the wrench tighten the screw in the middle of the nut, then tighten the nut itself.
Unless there is slop in the box, DO NOT adjust it! If the box is fine, tightening the adjuster can majorly damage it. The switch on the dash tells the computer where to set the assist at, but since your car doesn't have the valve, or the ability to control it in the computer, there really isn't a way you can add it.
Ford_Six, I concur with your answer. That adjustment on the steering gear box is a serious matter and with power steering it is even more serious as you can not feel the damage you are doing. You have to have pressure gages and all to make accurate adjustments.

Sounds dirty....
I've got it on my '96 Town car, and I really like it. I usually have it on the middle setting; the "high effort" setting is actually a little too heavy at times.
Mantta, what's your '97? I've had a lot of cars over the years, but this one is my absolute favorite, and I wouldn't trade it for anything. Every time I get behind the wheel, I'm reminded just how much I love it. My '96 is a triple-black Signature Touring model. It's always available for weddings or funerals...
Well now I have to know. How does the EVO system work? Is there a variable orifice in the high pressure line coming off of the pump? Is it a variable displacement pump? Is it infinitely adjustable or just a 2 or 3 position switch? What's the difference between the EVO system and other speed sensitive steering systems?
I also agree with the other posts concerning steering gearbox adjustments. I have seen one get adjusted with the wheels pointing straight. Everything seemed great but when the wheel was turned it got very tight. The gears tend to wear more in the teeth that are engaged during straight line driving. IMO I would rather replace a steering box than adjust it, just because it's so critical to safety.
1956MarkII, My Lincoln is a 97 Signature Series, only has 62,000 miles on it. I love it! I have got as high as 27 MPG on the highway with it.
WOW!! My mileage has never been that high, but I think the Touring package has something to do with that (numerically-higher rear end, wider tires, etc...). I can tell you that I'm averaging 22.4 mpg just driving back and forth to work, which ain't bad for a 4200-pound car. Currently at 79,000 miles, BTW.
Errgghh! IE just crashed 15 minutes of long reply That does it, my father in law's gonna get Mozilla whether he likes it or not!
So anyway, this'll be a quick thanks to those who responded, I'll be looking into swapping PS parts from either a later model EVO TC or seeing if a Crown Vic PS system part(s) will make any diff.
