On my 99 PSD while applying the brakes at a stop light, there is a blender like noise coming from the engine compartment..(gets louder if braking hard) After serveral miles of driving, the noise goes away.. but returns the next time I drive it.. I am thinking it is the vacuum pump.. right or wrong?
If it only happens when the brake is pressed, it may not be the pump. i wonder if your brake booster has a broken diaphragm? Vacuum pumps do go bad though. You might try to disconnect the booster and plug the hose, see if it goes away. THIS WILL DISABLE THE POWER ASSIST TO YOUR BRAKES. If it's still there I would suspect the pump. maybe you could simulate the booster and see if the pump acts up? By the way, welcome.
Any luck on finding a solution? My 2002 PSD sounds like it's doing the same thing. It sounds like a power steering pump that is low on fluid. It makes the wining noise if stopped while pressing on the brake pedal or stopped and turning the steering wheel. Any ideas???
I wished I could tell you what was causing the whin, but the darn thing fixed itself and the last time I drove the truck it sounded fine.. go figure.. but, i have a feeling it going to come back.. The one fellow said to remove and plug the vaccuum hose to the brakes but could not figure out how to do it.. I will tell you know if i fix it.. clint
Thanks for the info.. the power steering pump is making the noise.. but it come and goes.. fluid level is good but should I change it ?.. Do I have to bleed air out of the system if I change the fluid by turning the steering to it's extremes several times?

Reason: error
Look at the fluid. If it looks burnt or cruddy (shouldn't, unless you really ran it low for long periods -but from your note, you did not, and the levels are fine) then change it, or if you get bad vibes, change it.
Personally, the only time I ever changed the fluid in a power steering system was when I was forced to (blowing a line, spilling it out on the road, etc etc etc) -this may or may not be a 'bad' thing, I don't know. Never met anyone who changed 'em on purpose
Ok, if you DO change it, or get air in the system: Yes, bleed it. But its a fairly easy thing. Just fire 'er up, and gently turn the wheel all the way to one direction (until it hits the stops) then turn it gently all the way to the other side. Do this a couple or few times, then center it, stop the engine, check the fluid level, and viola! you're done!
