kwikkordead, you may want to try and get that corrogated rubber tube off of there after the filter, and get one made of aluminium or hard piping of some sort, something smoother flowing than the corrogation is going to cause less turbulance as far as air flow is concerned getting from the filter to the turbo. Use small lengths of straight rubber tubing and clamp the turbo to the pipe and the pipe to the air filter.
That is basically what the AIS kits are doing though. That is a big filter you have in there, fills the hole.... Broken Wire
When I built my tymar style intake, I bought a Baldwin PA2818 filter, a 4 inch 45deg. aluminized exhaust pipe, and a 4.5 inch Breeze Constant Torque clamp. All came to a grand total of about $50. To that I added about 2 more inches of 4 inch tube which I welded to one end of the 45 deg. elbow. Then I removed the factory airbox and tubing back to the CCV. I did the CCV reroute at the same time. The welded pipe and filter are now installed and you have a tymar style intake and a CCV mod all in one. The CT clamp goes on the filter end and the factory clamp works great on the other end. This eliminates almost all the corragated plastic tubing going to the turbo except for the 10 inch piece that connects directly to the turbo. Just a note this works on an early 99 and may need to be modified for later or earlier trucks.
I went with the Tymar, and it was pretty easy to install. I also got the second filter ahead of time. I had the original box setup, with the recalled fasteners too!!. The top of the box developed a crack in it on the turbo side . When I did the install for the tymar I was relieved to see no evidence of dust.
As far as the Tymar goes I love it. I can hear the turbo spool up earlier. The filter is HUGE. Also, I was told, or read that the Donaldson filter is water repellant, so I am not worried about moisture either.
Geuss what guys, I got me (2) huge filters like kwik's & installed one this weekend. 80.00 total for both, I like it. Can't tell any difference in turbo whine, but I did notice
a little more power down low & at highway speeds. Oh & mileage seems to be better
also.I hope to add a flowmaster 30 series here sometime soon.
would it be worth while to perhaps put a small hood scoop on top of the drivers side of the hood to act as ram air? i was also planning on fabbing my own ram air tube of some sorts from the grill up to the bottom of the filter. would it be best to get cold air from all sides i guess? i've got a '95 with a home-made TYMAR
What model truck do you have? The Severe duty AIS won't fit the pre 99.5, or whenever they changed to the newer setup. The air is drawn around the side of the battery from in front of the grill.
I have an early 99 and installed the AIS system. It fits but there is a special hose from the filter housing to the turbo that you need to get. I think it was around 20.00 dollars.
