Well I think I'm going to get a Tymar intake. How long does it take you
get it in from when you order it? And they only cost like 120.00 for 99+
psd's right?
I did alot of research and decided to go with the Motorcraft A.I.S, since my truck (2000 PSD 4x4) is under warranty, I purchased it from the dealer today and installed it in less than a hour, it is a nice setup. I took it for a test drive after installation and it seemed more responsive...and the RPM was lower at 60 MPH...
does it have the air duct channel that still pulls air from the back side of the grill?
I think i've seen that one. The channel goes around the battery, instead of being
that big piece of plastic that goes over the top of the battery?
yes it looks like this: http://www.usdieselparts.com/AIS_Severe_Duty.cfm
it fits perfectly. and at 60 MPH I am now at less than 2000 rpm, about 1700 I guess..faster acceleration, I hope the MPG gets better, I will let you know, I am getting about 16.5 before A.I.S...I got mine from the local dealer, did not want to wait for shipping..

This is one of the age old battles, which air intake to get. Some of this comes down to personal preference. From what I've read here, and on ther sites, there seems to be two important points to remember while chosing an air intake sytem. The most important is that they seal out dust, so as to provide as much protection to the turbo as possible while still providing a whole bunch of air to the motor. Secondly for those with factory warranties, you must be careful no to void the warranty. I don't think the aftermarket intakes will void warranties in general, but once there is a problem you must prove that it had nothing to do with the aftermarket parts. Some of the Ford dealerships seem be a little more sneaky when trying to avoid warranty work. Having said that I had first gone with a K & N filter element to replace the stocker, only to learn that the filter may fail as it ages through cleaning and oiling. I now have a Tymar and absolutely love it, but to each his own. Do as much research as you can. Good luck.

I just installed a NAPA air filter part # 6637 on my '99 PSD. It required that I remove the stock filter housing to get it to fit. BIG filter. The rubber air boot that went to the stock filter housing fit right over the flange on the new air filter. It was a bit of a stretch getting it on, but in the end it was a perfect fit.

Kwik,
Have you been able to tell a difference with the air filter(mileage, horsepower, torque, ect.)?
Thanks,

Diesel, I installed my tymar in 20 minutes about 2 weeks ago! I love it boy you sure can hear the turbo. My price was a little more than what you quoted because I went ahead and got an extra filter so I wouldn't have to pay shipping for it later. Shipping time was only 2 or 3 days from the time I paid for it.

Huh? Your RPM's shouldn't change unless you change gear ratios.
is there a web page for these tymar systems. I live in heavy duty snow country and in the winter my milage goes down to 9 and when you pull the filter its full of road water and snow. Ford obviously had a problem with it in 1999 because they changed the air filter system 1/2 way thru the year and I have the old system

What model truck do you have? The Severe duty AIS won't fit the pre 99.5, or whenever they changed to the newer setup. The air is drawn around the side of the battery from in front of the grill.

I haven't owned the truck long enough to give before and after data other than watching two stock air filters turn grey withing weeks of replacing them. And I live in Seattle where it rains a lot, cleaning the dust out of the air. I installed the NAPA 6637, pulled the 5th wheel to Yellowstone and back and it still looks white, well maybe just the slightest of off white shade now. Still very servicable. I didn't notice any difference in power, the other filters were still new enough to not make the filter minder move, but they sure got dirty in a hurry. I can hear the turbo a lot more, but that's music to my ears.
