Until the newest 6L transmission came out, you still needed to shift out of OD, even with the diesel engine. I too tow 6000-7500lbs of live weight and I will never tow in OD, even with an empty trailer. It knows its there, and will hunt even on straight highways. (5.4L, tow package)

Maybe...A 5 speed. No hunting there. If the tranny shifts itself, call an exorcist, the thing is probably possessed. Other than that You're good. NO OD! Unless its regualr driving.

Any one want to tell me what it says in the manual?

My money says Ford's engineers may just know what they are talking about.

Like I said eariler, if it hunts, pull it out of OD (last time I looked my manual said this).

I dunno. Ford's engineers. They build them...But I've never really trusted them. More so the dealer I don't rust. When we traded in our '86 Mustang and got the explorer, there was a couple lookin at our 'stang we had just hauled in. 2 motors and a broken oil pan had done it for us, so we were there, and they strated alkin about how the car was only driven by a little old lady to and from church, and it only had 20,000 km on it. My mom and dad burst out laughing, and as the dealer strolled by to see if they were eager for the stallion, my mom and dad were telling the story of hell with 2 doors. Anyway, the couple got really ticked and left. The dealer was redder than a turbo without any oil lubrication. He looked at us, muttered, and walked away. We came back 3 days later to meet him. He smiled, greeted us, and tried to rip us off on the explorer. I, at the time, was 7. I couldn't tell you whether a 350 had a camshaft.Anyway, my dad decided that the explorer was our choice. A used 91 4.o litre. The thing was a blast to drive, lots of power, and decent gas mileage. Since my dad works at sea, my mom had the beast to herself. Here's how amazing Fords really are: My mom, like most females, don't kow what maintenece is. The explorer had 2 oil changes in its life, and the air filter was changed ONCE. ONCE, When we bought it. We bought it in 94. In 1998, we started to get some bad knocks and such, and we didnt know what was wrong.(well, my mom didnt, and she wouldnt listen to me, as 30 dollars was out of the question-i mean, come on-She had to pay to buy it!)Anyway, in 1999, the tranny went. Fluid was never changed, nothing was ever done. We got the tranny rebuilt, and we were on our way. 2000 rolls along, and guess what goes again? The tranny. We get it rebuilt again, cheaper this time. My mom wants to save money. So we go out, and we go on with our lives. Now this was our usual vehicle(we bought the truck in '99, but thats another story)so it had 327,000 km on it, with almost 6 year old oil and an almost stock air filter. The motor FINALLY went. 6 years after we bought it, it fnally let go. There is no chevy like that, or dodge, or anything. We got the motor replaced, and we were on our way. It was never rust checked, never lubed, never anything, and then, the gas cover and area starts to rust. My mom flips, sayin fords are this and that. So the truck comes into the pic. We strt runnin it, and we give the Explorer to my uncle, up north. He changed the oil, and he has the air filter up at his house, and he shows my mom it every time we visit. I'll try to get some pics sometime. Either way, that was the best vehicle we ever owned. It still runs now, and its better than when we owned it. Going up hills, my uncle pins the gas and you cant move in your seat. I don't know why I wrote this. Now I want an explorer again. No crappy 281's, or 330's
I want my EXPLORER(or bronco, Bronco's are amazing)

Anyway, the odometer reads 500 and something thousand clicks, but thats the original motor and the new one, so about 250,000 km on the new motor. Only prob now is the drivers seayt is seized.

And you say you don't trust the Ford engineers...? If they can build vehicles to take that kind of abuse, why not trust them?

Question Regarding Hunting

I have a 99 F-140 6cy 2wd. Around 50-60 miles per hour it acts as though it can't find what gear it is in, to much gas, not enough. I assume that is what you mean with hunting. This won't do it if you are in an acceleration past 65 but if you stay there for any length of time it does this.

First question, does this have anything to do with the overdrive? If yes, can you push the od button on the highway at 60 mph and take it out of od, will that hurt my truck?

Secondly, this started right after my motor was redone. I blew a head gasket, which didn't crack the block (I believe the terminology is correct here). I got blessed, because I was in BFE Oklahoma and had to make it back to Dallas. I got home going 45 mph. Talk about a long trip. Something about the shaft inside of a piston broke (I think). Is this something related to that?

My truck has 113k miles on it and has been a problem the last 3 years I have owned it. I bought it with 32k miles on it and luckily purchased a 100k extended warranty. Good thing, because I have had problems with it every 6 months. The warranty ran out in March of this year. I have been nervous ever since.

Any suggestions or comments would be great!!! Thanks and have a blessed day!

Kaitlyn.

Damn... Morris is right! Ford rules! The same uncle we gave the explorer to, back in 79 or 81, he bought a brand new dodge. Tranny fell out, it didn't just fail. It FELL out. He sold it off, and has had fords since. That was the only non ford he ever owned.

A gemale. With atruck. Very nice touch. The way you wrote "Something about the shaft inside of a piston broke" sounds like your wrist pin, but that wouldn't be it, because it was only the gasket that needed replacing. Scary though. The best way to keep your engine good, especially that south, get heavy weight oil in your crank case(where oil is stored), something like 20w40, maybe higher. Not too high though. Anyway, the truck, I believe(my truck) has a fried coil pack. Since its distributor-less, I'm scared. Never dealt with this tecgnology before. Quite useless. Any idea of the cost, time, effort?

That's where I need to proof read things before sending them off. I don't know a lot about trucks, but I do know that I drive an F-150. I can't tell you the size of the motor or any of that stuff, but I can tell you I have spent way too much money on it. My extended warranty was about $1200. I have exceded that about 4 times over in 2 1/2 years. I am seriously looking at getting out from under this hunk of junk and getting an expedition. Never will I own a 99 Ford!!! I have heard that is a terrible year for the F-150's, especially the 6 cyl.

We live and learn.

It's had the entire front break system, callipers, rotars, etc replaced twice, the rear replaced once, the fuel system twice, head gasket once, power window motor on drivers side once, and now we need the power window switch replaced (about 2 years later) and the **** from hot to cold will turn but it isn't catching in the back, so I am stuck on Cold. In Texas, that's not a bad thing till about January or so. Too much money into this pit. However, I will say, that even through all of this, it has never stranded me or my son. It has always taken care of us. It has been rear-ended 3 times and the bumber hasn't moved, it has 3 tiny quarter size dints in the chrome bumper. I have to say, even with the issues, it's been a loyal truck to start every day and get me where I am going safe and sound.

Oh God, I say put thebthing over a cliff, at least. The front brake system TWICE? Sick. Just sick. Ford's rear ends(i.e. frame and bumoers) are tough as hell. I hit mine with our snowblower and it didnt even scratch. there's a small bump you can only see when light shines on it from when I put the fourwheeler into it. Brakes failed on the fourwheller, but yeah. Your truck has a whole 4.2 litres of power. Mine has 4.6, and it's a V8. Great for lighter cars, but the truck's too heavy for it, so I'm lookin toward a supercharger, or some bolt on mods. For the Expedition, you can't get anything less that a 5.4 I believe, so be ready for gas bills to up a little. What temperature is it there in Texas in January? Here, around the midlle of January, it hits -30 celcius, I don't know the conversion, but its below 0. Starting the truck becomes interesting, because the air is so cold and dense, trying to be gentle on the throttle isn't a consideration. It's so amazing. Drag racing is the best, as loong as you hit no ice.

The 2 biggest probs with 97's are the coil packs(you lose spark) and the exhaust(catalytic converter). And they have a problem with the drivers side door cracking. Anyway, its an amzing machine. Do not look at late model 98's, 99', or 2000's. All were bad years. They tried to make the truck better, but they failed. Horribly.

I just went through the same thing on my 98. turns out the blend door actuator was bad. the blend door is what opens/closes for hot and cold air.

The 2 biggest probs with 97's are the coil packs
Happened in my bros old 97 after 190,000 mi

And they have a problem with the drivers side door cracking.
a very common problem - my dads 97 has it, my 98 has it, my bros 99 has it........the only fix is a new door, and even then it will come back eventually. I was once told it was from the doors opening/closing all the time and since they are big doors the cracks are just from stress.
