first time here,so be easy on me. I'm in the process of building a 79 f250 4x4 with 76 grill, need to know if I have the right front driveshaft, the one I have has the c/v joint on one end,it has a 300 and c6 tranny in it,also does any one now the size of the bolts that hold it to the transfer case. any help would be great.
When you say CV joint, do you mean the big steel collar-like thingy with 2 u-joints in it? If so, I believe it's a double cardan joint and they're a real pain to take apart.
Some trucks came with them on both front and rear shafts, some only the rear shaft, and, I've heard, some only on the front shaft. The only wat to tell if it's the right shaft is to put it on and see if it's the right length. You should have at least an inch of slip each way, but when extended, the splines shouldn't be visible at the end of the yoke (I'm assuming there's a slip yoke on it).
I'm not sure if all the bolts for the t-case yoke are the same, but you should be able to get them at a local hardware store or auto parts store. Just make sure you get the grade 8 or hardened ones. The original bolts I had had a 12-point star shaped head, but the new ones I got use a hex key.
You can figure out the threads by trying other bolts in the holes, then measure the legnth and head to the store.
If you can't do that, I still have the original bolts for mine and I can measure them when I get home.
I've heard those are a pain to tear into, ya it's got a slip yoke on it, need to change yokes though, splines are showing when fully extended by about an inch. guy brought me some bolts to work today, 12 point star head, so they should work. thanks for the help kevin.
