I have a 2002 Escape 6 cylinder. The past two weeks there has been intermittent problems starting the car. Engine turns over but will not stay running. Fuel Pump seems to engage fien when key is turned on. And engine will start if I apply pressure to the gas pedal but as soon as I release pressure from gas pedal engien stalls. Like I said thsi started approx 2 weeks ago and has been gradually happening more frequently. Thanks in advance for any help you guys can provide.
Being a 2002, has it been reflashed (should be in the recall)? How many miles? Have you cleaned the throttle body or had it replaced (they like to stick)? It could be the MAF or IAC. It should be throwing a code, many of the chain auto parts stores with service bays will read the code for free.
I replaced the IAC this afternoon and it seems to be OK now - We'll see if it lasts.....
The new IAC should take care of you for a long time, but I would also get some TB cleaner and a tooth brush and clean inside the Throttle Body as Bannaboat suggested. If the IAC was gummed up enough to be sticking the TB is probably dirty too and will cause "sticky throttle" known to cause driver irritation.
Can you give a little more instruction on cleaning the TB??? Where it is? Exact steps to take?? Thanks in advance for anything you can offer?
Be very careful of the MAF wire, use a q-tip for that. Other than that, just use some TB cleaner and scrub any black or brown deposits away. Most will be where the throttle body plate meets the throttle body bore.
