Hi...I am a newbie and probably am asking a dumb question but here goes anyway. I have a 78 f100 with a 428 in it...is there a way to look on the motor for a stamp that will tell you for sure its a 428 and if so..where is the stamp...also does the 428 run lower oil pressure since it doesnt have the side oilers like the 427? Any assistance will be greatly appreciative.
Oil pressure does not change with type of block. The "side oiler" makes the oil feed the mains FIRST, then up to the top of block. Standard blocks feed the cam, then down and up. Nothing there changes the oil pressure available. Only reason for differences is bearing clearnaces(wear).
As for knowing what it is?? No real way unless you pull a head and measure bore/stroke. The side oiler is the only block that you can LOOK at and know what it is suppose to be.
Welcome aboard Brad, and remember, there are no dumb questions. First off, what makes you think you have a 428 under the hood? Unfortunately, all the FE's pretty much look alike from the outside, so you may even have a 360... If the motor is stock to your truck, post up the VIN number, we can tell the motor from there for you.
look for a scratched A or C on the back of the block, then it is most definitely a 428. The A is kind of a weird looking A but you'll see it.... it's behind the flywheel..
As for the motor, check the FAQ for some good info. you'll want to perform a stroke measurment or ID the crank. unless you're absolutely certain it has the stock motor...then the VIN may tell you what you have.
Hi the motor is not stock ...I looked up the vin and it came with a 302....man I bought the truck from told me he put the 428 in there....and I know the guy..so I trust what he said
Not to change the subject too much, but I saw Stevie Ray in the gym at Humboldt State University in northern California during the Couldn't Stand the Weather tour back in 1984 or 1985. This may sound extreme (or like I have lived a lame life), but it was one of the top 5 things I have ever experienced. He absolutely blew me away. Not to sound too much like a girly-man, but I get chills just thinking about that performance. A truly unbelievable talent that was taken from us way too soon.
I never got to see SRV but I have so many videos and bootlegs its not funny..... I have atleast 7 concerts on video and countless others on tape or cd....thanks for all the info on the engine...srvstratmaster@aol.com............thanks again ...
