Bronco II steering adjustment?

My '90 Bronco II (just acquired) seems to have a bit of play in the steering wheel.

Is there an adjustment in the steering box to minimize play?

I'll have the tie rod ends checked tomorrow - but was wondering if it might be as simple as it was on the old Mercedes 240D I had which only required an ever so slight adjustment to the worm gear in the steering box.

Hawk, there is a long bar that runs across the front of the steering, I think it's called the track bar. Check it for play in the ends. Ford used a nylon bushing on some of these and they wear out pretty quickly.

Bronco II steering adjustment?

My '86 Broncho II has the exact same problem, and we replaced the tie rod ends. My husband said he's pretty sure that on the steering box, there's an adjuster. Turn the steering wheel all the way to the left, loosen the nut by putting a screwdriver in the slot, and tighten the piece of slotted all thread. Tighten back down the nut, turn the steering wheel all the way to the right, and repeat. Now, if I could only get him to do this to mine! He did this on our '85, and it worked great.

I appreciate the info. When my BII gets out of the shop I may take a closer look at adjusting the steering box. By then my Haynes manual should be here.

Just for information - on my '82 Mercedes 240D it turned out that one had to 'back out' the adjuster to 'tighten' the play in the steering box. Seemed backwards (heck, it WAS backwards). But the mechanic was right. His main caution was that if I got it too tight, the steering would bind some and might even damage or destroy the steering box.

I'll go slow and see how this one works. And will check the tie ends and bushings to see if those need replacement.
