My cousin had lightning take out his modem. So I suggested he buy one of the cheapies for about $30, especially since his computer had already had the original replaced by a faster but cheaper one. Now, being the computer was bought used from where his sister-in-law works, they do not have a system disk. So when I tried to install the new modem for them it could not find the correct drivers. The system is windows 98. Does anybody now if there is a way to use the system disk from another windows 98 computer to try and find the correct drivers, or is there a way to possibly download the drivers off the net from my computer and save them to a disk. I haven't kept up on all that stuff like I should and I've been to busy to do research so I thought I'd check here. He lives 35 miles from me so I'd like to have a pretty sure solution before I head over there again. Thanks in advance for any help.
You shuld be able to get the drivers from the manufacturer of the modem, they should have been provided by the OEM of the modem. You could use another disc, or you could go to a place like driverguide.com and register and see if the drivers you need are there.
Chances are the modem came with a driver disk, but since this is Win98 it does not store a set of CAB files on the harddrive and is asking for Windows specific files.
One way to get around this is to search the harddrive for each file that is asked for during the installation of the modem. Chances are the files are already there but Win98 isn't "smart" enough to know that and wants them from a CD.
Yes you can get away with another Win98 CD, but you may need to make sure you have the correct Windows 98 version (original release, second edition). That may make a difference.
My 2 pennies on this (and so that darned Pity the Fool goes away )
