Will be towing this weekend and will post back. No matter what, I still don't like the fact that I don't have the same transmission that I had. There should be a better way to soften the brake in the trans. rather then just take part of it away.

Question Towing with a 6spd..

My 04 250 SD 6.0 6spd is new to me. It will go on it's first trip mid next week. Towing a little over 6000/7000 gvw. (some in the bed, most on the hitch).

I'm used to my built 460/C6 in my 88 F250. With all this talk about the autos, downshifting -trans braking, Since I am in control of gear selection, what are some things I need to watch out for when assending/descending lengthy steep grades. Other than not lugging the engine in too high of a gear, are there issues with engine operation if I allow engine braking when going down a hill? I understand that exhaust brakes are a no no on the PSD 6.0. I was hoping to install one, but as I learn more, that might not be a good idea. For this trip, the truck is bone stock and will only have less than 3000 miles on her by the trip's end.

Read the owner manual and use the tow haul mode. Go out on a test run and get used to what it does. You don't need a exhaust brake with the tow/haul mode.

Tow/Haul Mode?

My 6spd does not have Tow/Haul mode. It's a manual transmission. And yeah, I've read much of the owners manual. But Fords words aren't always the gospel. I would rather have users like yourself, with experience towing with the 6spd, share some of their wisdom.

Tow with 6spd

I've heard of some issues with the 6.0 when descending a long grade, using engine braking, where when it's time to accellerate, the engine coughs and nearly dies. I don't know of a service bullitin about this. Just hear-say.

Flash

I purchased my 04, new with only a few hundred miles on it just a couple weeks ago. I don't know if my truck's been flashed or not.

Depends on the build date of the truck and the engine. You can see the build date of the engine on the FICM that is mounted on the driver side valve cover toward the back. You need to get up in the engine compartment and look down on the engine with a flashlight. Post your engine build date.
