pulling codes on 98 ranger

The check engine light has been on on my 98 Ranger, it started happening after I ran it out of gas one night, and I am not sure how to get er back to normal. Do I need a code reader or can I pull the codes with a jumper wire like on older vehicles. This is the newest vehicle I've ever worked on, so I'm kinda lost, thanks for the help.

You need a code reader to pull OBD-II codes (1995+). Many auto parts stores will pull the codes for free.

Try clearing the codes first and then see if they come back. You can do this by removing the cable from the negative battery terminal for approx. 20 minutes.

IF you've got an autozone anywhere near you, try them. They sometimes pull the codes for free. Make sure you write down the codes and post them here or look them up here. Do not listen to what the autozone guy tells you. He may know what he's talking about, but odds are he won't.
