I understand a dirty MAF can cause a lean condition (possibly pinging). I am not sure of the location of the MAF. What is the recommended procedure for testing it and cleaning it?
It helps if you tell us what year/engine you have, but with the MAF its pretty much the same. Assuming its a 97-03 F150, the MAF is inside the the air filter housing. You have to pry it apart to get to it. Some people use electical cleaner some use throttle body cleaner, not sure with is better. Do you have a K&N type air filter? If you put too much oil on it this can cause the MAF to become dirty. Oh, and welcome to FTE!
Sorry Triton,
I have a 97 f150 4.6L with 75k on it, which has been pinging some lately. I have replaced the plugs and fuel filter and the air cleaner needed replacing at that time so I replaced it. I have read here that a dirty MAF will or can cause a lean condition and therefore cause pinging. I was not sure where it was found or the steps taken to clean it. Thanks for your help..
I used electrical cleaner on my maf and it made one of my o2 sensors run lean. If you go to AutoZone they are $99 with a $35 core I just bought one about 2 weeks ago.
I had the same symptoms you have. Cleaned the MAF using carb/throttle body cleaner, just remember it is a delicate sensor. I believe there is a thread that addresses this issue and helped me with my situation. Have not had the problem since and the pinging went away. Good luck.
