My '88 Bronco II recently lost overdrive. It started by shifting into overdrive slightly later than usual ,then cleared up and started acting normal. Then I was driving into work one day and it down shifted to 3rd and never went back into overdrive. Every thing else shifts fine. My friend says he had the same problem on his Ranger and a tranny shop put in a new 3-4 shift solenoid and solved the problem. Does this sound like it could be my trouble? Where is the solenoid located? Is that the round thing on the valve body that has a wire coming out of it? Is it hard to replace? I've checked the plug on the top of the transmission and the vacuum line, and there's no problem there.
I can't say for sure, but I had a similar problem. Mine locked in OD and I could not get it to go. I replaced the other solenoid and it worked. Bottom line is it could very well be the solenoid. To change it you have to remove the pan(after draining the tranny fluid) and remove the valve body. Then you can get to the solenoid. It can be done with the tranny in the vehicle. If you do this yourself, I would put a shift kit in it and replace the other solenoid at the same time. The shift kit is about $25-$30 and about the same for the solenoids. Good Luck.
The 3-4 shift solenoid circuit is really quite simple. Get a wiring diagram (the ones in the vehicle repair guides at www.autozone.com should be adequate), and start tracing the circuit until you find the break in the circuit. The solenoid could be bad, or there could be another fault in the circuit, or (hopefully not), instead of an electricl fault, the OD planetary has broken. Anyway, check the electronics first. Then check the hydraulics. Some, if not all A4LD applications with an electronic controlled 3-4 shift have a screen on the 3-4 shift solenoid that gets clogged up.
