hmmmm sounds like you some vaccume issues id start with the egr valve. does it pop when going down the road? kinda like cut out almost constantly? there are things you can do without the help of a mechanic id check all the vaccume lines and make sure they are all connected or not broken, make sure they are all going to the right places etc... if you have a multi meter and a repair manual it will tell you how to check elec curcuits. id hate to use my old 85 bronco2 as an example as it was just a nightmare of a vehicle. that was due to the mechanics that rebuilt the motor. instead of disconecting wires at their point of origin they just cut them all in half and then spliced them after. but defiantly give the engine compartment a good looking at and you may find a broken vaccume line. howver it really almost sounds like a bad egr valve or at least the sensor that goes to it not much that can actually go wrong with an egr valve it either works or it doesnt but if the sensor isnt teling it to open or close at the right time then that could cause haywire to happen. good luck with it hopw you have better luck with your 85 than i had with mine
