im a new and proud ford owner. but i have a problem. i own a 71 f-100,390, automatic, sport custom. 1st i dont know which tranny it has and 2nd she isnt shifting out of 1st gear. i can manually shift on the column but thats it. i checked the vacuum line goin to the tranny and it is still connected (at the carb also). jif it helps the truck was sitting for a couple of years but everything else works beautifully. any suggestions would really help i just relized that i should have posted on the tranny forum but they seem to be talking more about newer cars

I'd pull the vacuum line off at the transmission while it's running and make sure you have vacuum there before you do anything. You may also want to make sure the hose connections aren't leaking, as in dry rotted, and the metal line isn't rubbed through anywhere. If everything is OK with the vacuum down to the transmission I'd replace the modulator valve on the tranny. You may want to double check where that line is hooked up...you said it's hooked at the carb? It will still work, even if hooked at the carb as long as you have manifold vacuum. Usually the vacuum line is hooked on a fitting on the manifold. Make sure you have manifold vacuum (vacuum while the truck is idling, throttle plates closed).
I'm nearly positive that you have a C-6, but count the bolts on the pan, 17? = C-6.. 2ndly, I agree, check the vacuum lines, & then the modulator.& of course change your fluid & filter!( since it sat). Since you can catch 2nd when you shift manually I doubt that it's your band or friction plates. When you're changing your fluid gently remove your valve body and carefully ( so as not to lose the springs!) disassemble & clean inside & out with stoddard solvent. Note any signs of rust or varnishing. If the springs look bad replace'em with factory, or a reputable shift improver kit's.
