Have a 86 B2 & would like to run a code check. Stupid Question but can I & if so how do I go about it. I have seen different mentions of this around but they involve decoders & ohm? meters & such. Can I use the ignition method on my model year??
Yes, you can. I have an '87 BII and a '92 Explorer and use an analog volt meter to read trouble codes. It's not very difficult. You'll need a manual to get the details, but one lead of the ohm meter goes to the battery, one lead to the diagnostic connector, and a jumper wire to connect two leads of the connector.
Be sure the manual you get actually describes how to hook up the leads. The Chilton manual for my Explorer tells you that it can be done, but forgets to tell you how. The Haynes manual for my BII adequately describes the hook up and test procedure. Sometimes I go to the library and get the Motor Professional Edition manual and use that to get all the details for running the tests.
After having done it once or twice, you'll wonder why anyone would pay $40-60 for someone else just to extract trouble codes from the computer.
