<HR style="COLOR: #666666" SIZE=1> <!-- / icon and title --><!-- message -->I am in the process of building up a monster offroader. I have a 351m from a 79 bronco with the 4speed tranny. I really like the transmissuion and the engine. However i have been told by some people that the 351M is not worth using on my project since it isnt a low rpm engine and a weak block aswell. I had plans of stroking it out and beefing it up. Should i stick with this plan and will it be worth it cause i am looking to get torque numbers in the upper 400s if not more and horsepower in the upper 400s aswell. Is this realistic or should i swap for another engine. By the way a 460 will not work, unless it is fairly the same size as the 351. Also where can i get the stroker kit for it and what am i looking into price wise for this engine build up. thanks for you input.
I don't know who told you that the 351 isn't a low rpm torque motor, or had a weak block, but check out some of these other threads about this engine. Your best bet is probably going to be to make the motor a 400. There are MANY different options for what you can do, and 99% of them are listed in these threads. Just hunt around a little, and you'll find some great ideas.
You have a great motor, and there is alot of potential with it. Stick to your guns, build it, and show them what a 400 can do, there are a few really good power recipies for the 351m and 400 in this forum. 400's and 351's can be torque monsters...
There are ways to offset grind a 400 crank and get 424 cu inches or more out of a 351M block for only a few more dollars than a straight rebuild. If you want to spend more money, you can use a 4.25" stroke Windsor crank, and custom rods to get 434 cu inches and a really strong bottom end. To this add ported heads, suitable hydraulic roller cam, headers, 600 CFM carb and dual plane intake. Your torque might exceed 500 ft-lbs @2000 RPM.
