Cool Fan clutch from hell

Can anyone give me a tip for removing probably the original fan/clutch from my 1983 F150 300-6. Six hours, countless busted knuckles and more mosquito bites than I care to mention and I'm still where I started. Dynamite is starting to look pretty good right now.

i cant really help you, but i think i might be in the same boat. What went wrong to make you think your fan clutch is bad? cuz mine--whenever im driving down the road and i punch it--it sounds like the fan spins really fast. kinda sounds like a s-10 blazer (90's) with that really high idle. any help would be appreciated. thanks

My fan clutch is good, it's my waterpump that's bad. I need to get the fan, fanclutch and pulley out of the way to access the water pump. Good luck with your problem.

You can rent or borrow (Check with a rental shop or Autozone - If you buy a water pump they will loan the tool for free) a fan clutch tool to get on the nut behind the clutch, remember the main clutch bolt is a reverse thread. (i.e. removing the bolt would be turn to the right)

Hope this helps.

Oscar Meier is correct. the fan clutch is reverse threaded. I changed late one night with out the special slim wrench it requires. I used a long screwdriver and a big hammer. I just beat it (in reverse) until I could turn it by hand. To put the new one on simply start the threads and the turn on the truck. The spinning motor will tighten the fan down for you. Good luck.

An air chisel worked for me. Just be carefull not to wreck the threads on the shaft.

mine was right hand thread not left hand.I think it matters if you have ac or not which way because the different belt routing makes it spin opposite ways

It should be marked on the fan shroud.

I rented the tools from Auto Zone. Well worth it. Had the whole job done in less that a half hour. 86 F150 300 with air. Left handed threads. Actually it went so easy and fast (For Once) I could of done it on Auto Zones lot.

FWIW
