If the axle is assembled and the tag is there and readable, there will be an L in the middle of the ratio-example-3L55 which means a 3.55 ratio with limited slip. If the third member is out of the housing, you should be able to look into the bores that the axle slides into, and one side (dont know which side it is off the top of my head) will have a two piece side gear assembly where the splines mate with the axleshaft.
I can't visualize what you mean. Do you know of a pic anywhwere on the web? Will the carrier have certain features or numbers on it? I am looking at buying a posi (traction loc) carrier from someone on Monday but I want to be able to confirm what I am getting. I am familiar with the 8.8, you can see the clutch packs inside. On the 9 inch I am unsure, they all seem to liik the same.
On one side the splines for the axle to fit into will be a solid one piece, but the other side will have a definite "split" running around the diameter of the splines- theres two different splined pieces for the axle to slide into. Also, if the axles are available, stick one in each side and try to turn one while holding the other. One more thing, I believe all carriers are machined for four spider gears, the factory posi ALWAYS has four spiders, but open carriers can have two or four. It can be hard to see into the carrier to count spiders, so just look for the holes that the crosspins fit into, if only two opposing holes show a pin then it aint no posi. Personaly I wouldnt waste my time looking for one they are pretty weak units, in performance and in strength-go with a spool.
