ABS light will come on and speedo goes to zero, last only a second or two, and happens more frequently on secondary roads. Don't think a bump is setting it off, but maybe more a speed issue but I am not sure about that. But it almost never happens on the highway, and will happen at least a couple times every day on secondary roads.
I have changed the VSS on the rear diff and that didn't help. So I pulled the rear diff cover, cleaned, and put new fluid in and that didn't help either. I have read of two sensors up front and am looking for info on these or ideas as to how I should proceed. Truck is 2002/5.4/SC/4x4/auto with 60k on the ticker,, any ideas????
The front ones are at the ends of the abs lines going down into the knuckle. To replace it you just have to remove the brakes and bend the backing plate a little. Undo two screws and put in the new one then plug it in to the old line. I just love Ford. Rear VSS=$30 Front VSS=$130 (each) have fun.
Thanks for that info CWB. Does anyone know if the front VSS's can be tested with an ohm meter or anyway for that matter? Are they worth pulling and cleaning? This problem is driving me crazy and seems to slowly be getting worse. It kicks off the cruise evertime the ABS light comes on, and I know that is supposed to happen, but very annoying for sure,,,,, thanks
I tried pulling and cleaning but it's a hassle.Make sure you clean off the knuckle before you remove the sensor or you will get crap down in the hole. Run a check on the light. If it says r or l is bad, clean it and check the resistance against the one on the other side. Just undo the plug behind the inner fender and then on the knuckle.
Hate to be a pain here CWB, but when you say "run a check on the light", I assume you mean with a scanner. I am not sure if my scanner will do the ABS,, is it a different plug than the engine diagnostics??? Thanks much for your help
