Has anyone tried to install a 2003 headlight switch in a 2002 Explorer. I would like to use the fog lamps while in the auto headlamp mode. 2002 Explorer will not let you turn on the fog lamps when the lamp switch is in the auto position.
My '04 XLT Sport doesn't allow activation of the fog lights with the switch in "Auto" (the **** can be pulled out but no fog lights) - I'm not sure the '03 would be any different. Someone posted a mod on this awhile back, but I don't remember where I saw it.
The fog lights on my 2003 XLT work in Automatic, Parking Lights, or Headlights if the control switch is pulled out. However, the headlights must be on low beam. I think thats even true if just the parking lights are on, but I haven't tested it. If it's in automatic and the switch is pulled out and the headlights are on low beam, the fog lights come on automatically when the headlights do. Here's what my ownders manual says regarding this control: . All of that being said, if yours is different, I suspect it's more than just a switch. There's probably some relays being used as interlock switches in the wiring path. I don't have a wiring diagram, so I can neither confirm nor refute this supposition.
The 2003 fog lamps do come on in automatic mode. In the 2002 you can't pull the switch out in the auto mode, it will only allow you to turn on the fogs when the head lamps are turned on manually. I agree, it may be more than just replacing the switch.
Sorry, I misunderstood your post - I thought you were trying to get the fogs on during the day with the switch in "Auto". Maybe your dealer's parts dept. will let you take a peek at the '02 and '03-'04 switches (if they're both in stock) to see what the difference is.............just a thought.
My '03 switch stays in auto but when I pull the switch out my fogs come on every time unless it's during daylight cause if your in auto during daylight headlights nor fogs will come on. But if you turn your switch to on position or where it's shows the light symbol then pull it your fogs should come on
