Hummm......I might have scored a drivetrain from a 71 Bronco. I believe that they had the 302, Dana20, 9" and 44. First, is this correct? Also, what manual tranny would this have? Is the only way I will be able to determine if the 9" is a big bearing by the 11"x1.75" drums?
Didn't some of those broncs come with a 6? I don't remember much about eb's off the top of my head, I'd have to dig out some refrence manuals. I bet if you ask this in the eb forum they can tell you right off the bat. If not post back and I'll blow the dust of my stuff and find out for you.
yes some came with 302s some with inline 6s, and a very rare few with 351w, they had 9in rears, and mostly D44 front although some had D30s I believe, almost all of the ones I have seen with a manuel trans had 3spds I have seen some with 4spds but they were all swapped in, and almost all of them (I used to say all but someone on this forum tells me I am wrong) had 28spl posi rears. and by big bearing rears I assume you mean the outer axle bearing, and that is another one where I have to say never seen the big bearings in one but I could be wrong again
if it is before 72.5 then you have a D35 front end. next time you look at it see if it has kingpins...if yes then it is a D35 and if balljopint then it is D44.
the 302 is very common and a very good motor to have! they have a lot more power for the really light frame/chassis combo!
if it is a 3 speed on the column (most were) then it is the 3.03 Ford 3 speed tranny and yes the only way to determine the big bearing 9" (prolly not) is the brake shoe size and of course the bearing size!
OK,,,,some specs on the 9"...it is about 59" WMS-WMS, the drum measures about 11.25" in diameter and I found the following numbers stamped near the pinion:
