I had to let me son borrow my 99 expy eb because his car was in the shop for a few days for a water pump repair. He tell me today that there was a lot of rain and the expy can really plow through the puddles with no problem.
Today its still raining hard and he asks me if the expy ever had a stutter and I said it always ran perfectly. Now he just 2-wayed me and told me the service engine soon light came on.
I figure that the combination of the puddles and the heavy rains today got something wet and threw a code.
He's picking up his car from the shop tomorrow and I won't be able to pick my expy back up for a few days and the weather will be warm and dry.
Now that I've bored you with the details do you think the water caused the symptoms I described? Thats what I think and or some sensor went bad because of the moisture. Thoughts much appreceated. thank you.
I would tell him he needs to plow through his wallet and get yours fixed during the few days you cant get to it. Maybe next time he will treat it with respect.
hes not the type to monkey with something and is always respectful of others stuff. we've had so much rain that large puddles were inevitable, its not like he went driving to see how many he could plow through. I was just looking for opinions on what may have happened based on the scenario described. Thank you.
Advance Auto Parts can read and clear the code if you want for free. So can other chain parts stores, although PeP Boys was much less helpful. If the code is cleared and does not come back then blame the puddles. If it's a real problem it will throw the code again. Picked up a used Pathfinder recently with the check engine light on. Didn't remember that when I test drove it. Dealer blamed the engine power wash done when detailing for delivery, so maybe water can cause codes. Advance read and cleared both codes. There's a lot more to the Pathfinder story but that's the only part that's pertinent to this thread.
You could clear the codes yourself by disconnecting the battery cable, stepping on the brakes and then reconnecting the battery. If the light stays off then you know it is an error.
Problem done - it took me 3.5 hours from start to finish doing coil pack 4 and the spark plug. running perfrct now. I do the other 7 plugs sometime over the next week.
The first time I changed plug #4 it took me 3hrs. I changed the Bosch plugs to Autolites this week and #4 took me 10mins. If you ever have to do it again it will be pretty easy now that you know how.
By the way, a common cause of failure of the #4 coil pack in earlier Expeditions is an antifreeze drip from the heater hoses poised above it. Perhaps a puddle killed the coil pack, perhaps it was antifreeze and the timing is coincidential. Might want to inspect the heater hose and all it's connections just in case.
My sisters 99 Expedition had an antifreze leak over the #4 also, must be common. I was out of town and couldn't help, the dealer charged $255 for this job!
