2000 V10 Oil consumption problems

hey has any one had any problems with their ex using oil I am running with Mobile one synthetic and the engine is leaking no oil.It is using maybe 1 qt every 1500 mile.I have been told that the piston oil rings may be stuck against the piston and not sealing against the cylinder wall due to carbon, also it is not smoking...........sharkwhit

Yea - me too

Have to say I have the same issue with M-1 from 30k up to my current 85K, I chock it up to the thin oil that simply passes.. keeps you checking the oil... and Walmart in business. We change oil from 5K to 7k depending on my mood.

Moved to the V10 forum.

I always saw that my V10 ate more M1 between changes versus non-synth oil.

I used Valvoline 5-30 full syn since my first oil change at 2000 miles untill 32,000. I never used ANY oil between 5000 mile changes. I switched to M1 0-20 and now I am using a half quart in 4000 miles. Next oil change I will go back to the 5-30 valvoline full syn!! I'm not sold on the Mobile 1.

I'm in the same boat as Ken on this one. I went back to dino oil and it never uses a drop.

Do not remember the smart guy who did the study and I killed the URL many years ago but one of the tests was for evaporation. My memory is that the evaporation cooeficient for most synthetics was modestly higher than dino. Add that fact to the increased size of the oil galleys, the surface area of the V10 oil pan and the spraying on two extra pistons and I am not at all suprised by the increased "consumption" of synthetics in our motors. I tend to change every 3000 or 3 months and went bact to Ford dino after about 3 changes of higher cost M1 and zero MPG change between the two.

My 99 E450 Motor Home has used 1 Qt of oil to 1500 miles since new. I use what the Manual calls for 5W-30. Engine performs just fine, does not smoke or lack for power. Disgusting as it may be in these modern times. Ford Calls that acceptable.,Just burns oil! I have 30,000 miles on it now, sitll 1500 miles to the quart.

Worn PCV valves can lead to higher oil consuption, particularly with synthetics. Ran into this, PCV seemed fine, but I replaced it anyway- problem solved. They're pretty cheap too.

My 99 F350 use's one every 1500-2000 miles also. Can't run synth, use's one every 1000 or less and at $4.00 each no way!

Just a note.

With 6qts.added after a filter and oil change the dipstick reads in the middle and will require 1qt.to bring to the top of the hash marks on the dipstick from the add oil mark.Which would mean 1/2 qt.of oil usage to bring to the top of the dipstick.

FWIW,I don't use a measurable amount between 3000 mi.oil changes on my 02,34,000mi,v10 using 5-20 Motorcraft oil.

The Motorcraft oil is pretty good. It is semi-syn in 5-20 and 5-30 which V10 seem to like. We use Chev RPM 15w40 (bulk fleet oil) at work. Our V10s rarely use more than 1qt between servcing.
Most oils do well up to 3k then start braking down/burning off.

There is a thread here with a poll on oil usage in V-10's. Some folks use none, others more than you!

One quart per 1500 miles is next to nothing. In my opinion, normal and of absolutley no concern.
