All I can say is this is gonna be awesome. I've always wanted to see a major volcanic eruption. I've been in several earthquakes, and seen a bunch of geysers, but never been near a major eruption. I was a little late for the May '80 eruption.
yea... my mom remembers it, we live downwind of the mountain, and there was a considerable amount of ash deposited here. In fact, the farmers are still reaping its many benefits, despite losing one of the best crop producing years to date in MT.
Uh, yea, I do, in St. Helens. You know something I don't, Matt!?
I slept up on the rim last summer, it was pretty awesome. The color of the shooting stars is intense up there.
edit: I just mentioned this to my wife and she looked at me like "well, duh!" and said its supposed to blow any day now. That sucks! So much for one of my favorite hiking trails. I really need to start reading the paper or listening to the news

I have a picture somewhere of the Billings west exit (#446 on I 90) with a bunch of cars lined up alongside the road parked, because the raining ash had clogged up so many air filters.
Ahh the big dust bowl effect may happen again. They said on the news that they doubted if it would go off as bad as the first eruption. LOL... I find their predictions to be somewhat iffy, myself. When the Earth talks, we listen. I remember the first one like it was yesterday. We got a bunch of ash here too.
Yea Pro, there have been several hundred minor earthquakes underneath the lava dome, it appears that rainwater has seeped down and is hitting the super hot magma. Thats how it blew in 80, and thats how its gonna blow this time, you just never know when. I doubt it'll be anytime soon, the snow hasn't even melted yet, so its not as hot as it needs to be yet.... soon though.... soon...
The fishing around there is awesome. I had the opportunity to fish Coldwater Lake (just below Johnson Ridge) a week ago and it was a fine, fine day of big trout!
I heard that they've closed the mountain to visitors today. I'm glad I went when I did.
Just to give you an idea of how active St. Helens is, here is a link to a page that shows you the output of the seismogram located near the rim of the crator. Earthquakes are occuring at a rate of 3 per minute. http://www.pnsn.org/WEBICORDER/GREEN...W_current.html
Yea I guess the major earthquakes started on Thursday. They showed the seismogram of the week prior, and there was almost no activity, and this week the needle was all over the place.
I had to change out airfilters here in KC because of the dust last time. I have been up on that mountain twice since then. At least as far as the roads would let me. The first time I was there many roads were closed and the ones that had been opened were still slipping down the side of the mountain. The last time I was there a few plants were starting to show thru the ash.
With the amount of BOOM @ St. Helens last time, can you imagine if yellowstone were to start getting as active? The whole cauldera, I've heard is starting to rise..or is it in a lake? I can't remember, but I watched something on the Discovery Channel one nite and even way up here in the NW corner of the state, they say it could be freaky if Yellerstone blew. And there already is more activity there..some things are coming alive that haven't been that way in a long time. Heh heh...glad I don't live in Billings!
