Its not the battery, I hear the fuel pump chime in, when I go to turn her over all I get is a click. Is it the starter?? I was in there checkin wires with my Haynes manual at my side( mind you I'm a rookie at best when it comes to engines )
any ideas????
Thank God it isnt winter yet..hopefully everything breaks thats going to before the snow falls!!
tap your starter with a small hamer a few times. if that doesnt work then its your starter solenoid located on the pass fender. if a replament doesnt fix your problem then the battery cables are probably bad.
Ok, try this before you go smacking any part of the truck starter or otherwise. If it makes all the noises like it wants to start but won't and you can here the start solenoid up near the battery click over, then crawl under the truck and look at the starter. There is a small clump of wires running to the rear of it. the big positive and a couple others... Your concern is the RED one with the female spade connector on the end. Make certain it is connected first, then try pushing it on to the male terminal. See if the truck will start after messing with this connection. My 92 did that all the time. The 93 is no different.
The stupid thing about this problem is that the connector is right there under the truck exposed to the elements and its a bare connector. No cover, nor insulator to protect the connection from the mud, grime, and the elements. I ended up replacing the bare female spade connector with an insulated one and the problem never occurred again.
ok so I've crawled under there and everything is connected and looks fine with the starter.
My haynes book says that if the starter motor doesnt operate but the starter relay does ( which is the case ) then the problem is either with the battery, the starter relay contacts or the starter motor connections.
Well the starter motor connections look fine, everything is clean and connected with the relay. So that leaves the battery. Now the battery connections are pretty corroded.. but when I turn the key I still get power to the rest of the vehichle... could the battery cables still be the problem?? Even though I am still getting power outa the battery?? I wouldnt think so..but then again what the hell do I know??
If the rest of the vehicle has power you may still be dealing with corrosion problems. The starter is the single biggest draw on the battery and smaller loads may work fine but the kind of amperage drawn by the starter requires good clean surface contact across the whole terminal.
The battery could have enought juice to power ur lights and stuff, but not enought for the starter. Try cleaning the terminals, if no luck, then try jumping the batt.
