I am getting ready to start making some permormance mods to the 5.8 in my 96 bronco. I have never done this to a fuel injected engine before. Does anyone have any advice on what the best bang for the buck is on these engines? I am planning exhaust and intake modifications with maybe a new cam as time and money allow. Where should I start?
Thanks-
Welcome to FTE glockster. I would sit on a new cam for now. I can highly recommend a pair of headers, and a high flow Y pipe. Bassani makes both of these units for your 96 (I know, I had them on my 96...great stuff). They are not cheap, but you get what you pay for when it comes to exhaust components. What are the primary duties of this bronco? What size tires are you running? How many miles on the rig? When was the last tuneup?
I just put Bassani's y pipe on my 95 bronco last week and man can I feel the difference, the ceramic headers will go on in about 3 weeks. I installed underdrive pulleys about 6 months ago, only about 10-12 HP gain but a noticeable difference in acceleration. Good luck with yours.
i would put duals and headers in first i noticed a big hp gain these trucks seem like there Asthmatic or somthing .when i put mine i also put in k&n intake which barely made a differnce underdrive pulleys were like maybe 10 hp? edelbrock manifold is a great mod to it fells like u got more tourqe and faster of the line.
RLKBOB, his '96 isn't SD EFI. it's MAF... so he gets alot more options for his mods. Very true about the torque though. big HP means nothing if you can't get that beast off the line (or outta the mud )
Thanks for the info all- Looks like I should have included more info.
Tires are stock 31-10.5, it has 115k mi but still seems to run good. I think I will go with the bassani pipe as suggested. I don't have any exhaust at all past the cat because the rest of it rotted off a few weeks ago. even without the exhaust it is still pretty quiet, I'm guessing the stock y pipe and cat must be pretty restrictive. I was thinking about the K&N FIPK kit but if this doesn't make a noticable difference I may just replace the element. Does anyone else have experience with these?
I'm about to add a chip, Edlebroke upper and lower, BBK throttle body, and a Motorvision throttle body spacer, solid brass cap and rotor.
Adding to my already 40,000 volt coil, 9mm wires with platuim plugs, K&N filtercharger, Full leanth Headmen Headers, with true dual side pipes, and a timing gear.
Yes, that is the unit that I ran on my 96. I cannot give that product a high enough rating. The fit, finish, and craftsmanship was great. It also added to a sweeet exhaust note.

dont buy the spacer and remove the plat plugs. they dont produce that good of a spark. cheap autolites are the way to go , ask anyone. the throttle spacers are paper weights they dont do anything for ya honest. the rest of your setup is good though.
Hey Rich, How difficult is the install? It looks like, 4 bolts to remove from the manifolds, disconnect from the tail pipe and bolt it up, my 96 has 3 o2 sensors ?

late
thats what the plats r, autolite. I found they r the best working plugs i have ever used in Fords. I've tried all, these ones r the best.
As for the spacer, I'm trying to bring up the top end a little, the power dies off before the tranny even shifts. I know u lose a little low end, but I'm going to give it a try, to see what the gains, losses r.
shorter runners = more hp . longer runners = more trq. so your backwards on that. any plat plug is garbage. copper is a better conductor. its been proven. true plats last longer but dont perform as good.
