if you are shoveling snow, shovel it into the back of the truck, unless you need the cargo area. racsan has great advise by filling an extra tire with sand, going to try that myself. BTW 4wd works really well too
I used to do the snow in the bed thing until one time when i needed to put something in the bed, and I had to use an axe to chop out the foot and a half of snow that turned into solid ice.
i throw some 2x's together in the bed to keep the sand bags right over the rear axle. you only need about 200 lbs back there. if your worried about the sand bags hitting you in an accident then use 2x10's to make the jig (piece in front of the wheel well, piece behind, and two pieces connecting them) and then secure a sheet of plywood over the 2x10's. you really onle need about half a sheet, if that. the front of the bed isn't the best place for a 2 wheel drive truck because you want the weight over the axle. you would have to put 3 times the amount in the front of the bed to make a difference for the rear wheels. just make the 2x's nice and tight so that the jig and the sandbags hsve no room to shift.
