I use Avast, and I've used Grisoft in the past. They work great. Adaware kills a lot of spyware, too. Try Xcleaner as well.

Just spent five hours trying to get rid of coolwebsearch! Finally downloaded SpySweeper (was nervous about any download, feared 'helpful' program might be the mothership for more junk) The SpySweeper finally cleared out most of the junk, and with a little manual chasing, I got rid of the coolwebsearch. That is a MEAN trojan/virus/etc. - keeps on morphing and cloning and growing!

To get rid of coolwebsearch try this site: CWS Shredder
The site has a lot of tools that can help eliminate that problem.

You'll probably find out that the scanner/eraser won't clear all of your problems! This coolwebsearch thing is always new and different and the guy that wrote CWS Shredder just kinda gave up trying to beat every new version. Most likely you will still have to manually search your startup pages and your registry to hand pick anything that doesn't belong. Good luck, as I know how frustrating the CWS can be!

Well, another new mother board and clean wipe and reinstall of windows, (SP2) and all programs and we are back in business. Using a router with fire wall now, virus protection software, Adaware, and RegRun. So far so good.....

This can be seen @ " AVG.com" and it is the "free" version. My McAfee didn't stop anything or even seem to see when "Trogan Downloader" ate my computer. I now use "Spybot S & D" and AVG. When my Norton runs out on my 2nd coomputer, I'll go with AVG. Good luck

AVG anti virus is your best bet as MikeW has stated.

You need a combination of programs. The latest Norton & the latest Adaware. These to programs in my opinion are the best Antivirus/Ad programs.
