Howdy again. Alright, heres the deal, I used to have Mcafee Virus Scanner on my computer, but a couple of months ago when I started up the computer it said it had caused an error and to try restarting my computer. (I can give you the details of the error message if you need it). Everytime I restart my computer it says its caused an error. I cant run the program at all and evertime I try too it gives me the error message. I fear I have a virus, because my computer is acting up and being stupid. What can I do too get my virus scanner working again? By the way its a 2000 Compaq Presario w/Intel Pentium Celeron Proccesor and windows ME.
First if you have the disk you can try uninstalling and reinstalling McAfee.
You can also go here http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/ and download stiner*****. It will remove many nasty worms and trojans. You could also go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ and do an online virus scan to make sure you don't have anything. You can try the scans before uninstalling McAfee, but you will probably have to reinstall it anyway.
I've heard that a typical surfer can last about 12-20 minutes online without virus protection before getting hit with something. Most likely whatever you try doing won't work because many viruses have built-in 'self preservation' and they actively prevent your AV from working. I'd say you have been infected (and spreading bugs) for a couple months now. Reformatting might be your best bet.
