backing plate to backing plate would probably work, but it'll be harder to detect. Probably the easiest would be to pull the pig and lay a straight edge across the front. However, that'd be a pain unless the pig was out..

I got the bed off, everything is pretty accessable just now. I'll give it a measure when I get back to it.

BTW, should I need one, the housing size is the same back to 73, right?

I gotta pull the gas tanks and clean them out too. Man ol gas stinks, and the scent doesn't wash off either.

it should work, as long as its not a 205.

Not to add or make confusion, I was asking if the 9" housing is the same back to 73?

pad placement and width, yes. The sometimes the housing bearings can be different (small / big bearing) and some of the older ones might be 28 spline, but if you had a 73 housing, it'll bolt up fine.

Update

I made it the 50 min ride to work on my 86 4X4 today. I thought I had a BW 1345 transfer case but it must have been a NP cause the one that I bought off Ebay that claims to be a BW is a lot different. With the back half missing, I guess you can misjudge things.

Finally after chaffing and scraping my arms and turning box end wrenches 1/16 turns, I pulled the seat, carpet, hump cover and released the top from the top. Got the heavy replacement bugger started up on the tranny shaft and it stopped about 1/2" short. Dark is closing in fast now, and I have to take a screwdriver and clean every v in the splined shaft, and then found another shaft that fit and drove it home. Got it back under and up in the dark and it mated this time, and got one bolt in to keep it in place.

The case that I removed had the shifting arm pointed up and this one has it pointing down. The removed one had a nut holding the arm and the new one doesn't, completely different. The removed one had a sensor on top like an oil sending unit, the new one doesn't. The new one has a two pin connector that I have no idea what to do with. I'll probably start it up and the truck will run backards.

Hopefully the next time I get to work on it, I can get the front drive shaft hooked up and drive it front wheel.

Where do ya check and add fluid? Looks like there are two plugs on the rear, I guess you fill it where the speedo goes in. Right??

If something can or will go wrong it will with me.

John
