I'm trying to get my Superwinch hubs off my 96 Bronco, but seem to be stuck. I have the whole assembly out and got the bearing locknut socket kit (on loan). I don't see where/how any of these sockets will work! I'm not sure if there are extra parts of the hub and that the locknut is behind these. I can't seem to get anthing else out of the hubs.
There is an outer ring that turns pretty much freely. There is an inner ring that does not turn. I'm *thinking* that this is the locknut, but it is an odd shape and I do not think that I can get a "grip" on it with any of these special spanners
Any ideas gents?
Let me know if pictures would help because I can get some if necessary.
Somewhat a false alarm. I got the extra pieces out. There was a sneaky yellow C- clip in there.
Now. Since I have them out. How do I clean all this nasty grease out of these parts? And secondly; my special sockets still don't seem to be big enough. Does anyone know exactly which one I need to get. It's a 6 prong.. but I don't know what size.
Manual hubs. I got the hubs out, but can't seem to find the correct sized socket for the bearing locknut! I've been to 2 Kragens and an Autozone! I found one that was close (2 5/8" 6-tines) but it seemed too small! I couldn't get it onto the nut! 2 3/4" seems like it may fit... but I dunno. Does ANYONE know what size a '96 Bronco is supposed to use?
you need this tool....it is the 5th pic down (Dana 44 hub socket) autozone, napa, and advance auto parts will carry it in stock! very common and it has to be 4 tines and not 6, you got the wrong one
Yeah, the tool in that link is a nice one because it has the outer flange. The one I got off the shelf at Advance Auto didn't have that but it works just fine.
Apparently, the 1996 hubs don't use the four toothed spindle lock nuts that the rest of us think they do. There is a bearing nut on the 1996's, although I don't know what size. There's a similar post in the 1987-1996 forum that might help you.
