I have a 2001 SD gas. Its the first vehicle I've owned that has the little wimpy sheet-metal looking terminals to clamp onto the battery posts. Its also the first vehicle I've owned that is so sensitive to the 12 volt battery being disconnected for a few minutes.
My question: Do the wimpy little clamps and posts need cleaning annually?
If yes, how does one do that without disconnecting the battery and upsetting the radio, clock, and fuel delivery system, etc?
They make a little gizmo that plugs into your power point with a 9v battery attached to keep all your settings...If your battery isn't leaking around the posts then you should be able to go for years without touching the terminals..I bought the gold terminals that the stereo nuts use they are nice. I needed to hook up my plow and winch..
You can use a good electrical cleaner to keep the corrosion down. Just loosen the clamp and spray the terminal post with the cleaner. You should try doing this at least twice a year depending on the area you live. If scrubbing is required just remove the clamp, battery maintance is a good thing.
I had the "wimpy" metal clamps on my 2000 Ranger, and hooked 4 more wires to the thing (at least one of which was 4 ga.) and never had a problem... They're probably stronger than you think... As to battery maintenance, I have a terminal brush, but only ever have to use it on other people's batteries. I have the little flannel washer thingies on mine and never have to touch them ('cept to install new stuff, of course!)
