302 or 351

I have an engine pulled from a 1977 Lincoln Versailles that I thought was a 302. I was told it was rebuilt about 30K miles ago and ran when tested. I checked the block casting number which is D4AE-6015-AA-10. I assumed it was a "74 block used in the rebuild. The engine came with a 2 barrel carb.

When trying to change the oil pan from a front sump to a rear sump, I ordered a pan kit with the dipstick provision since my block has the dipstick located at the timing cover and no side provision for the stick on the drivers side of the block. I held up the new pan (small front sump and large rear sump which I believe is for a Mustang) today and it did not fit my block. I compared it to the front sump pan and noticed the standard gasket did not quite fit the new pan and the rear area around the main is larger (deeper) on my old pan.

Could this be a 351?

Whats the firing order of the engine?

Look at the distributor, now look at the base of the distributor where the hold down bolt is located, is the base of the distributor an inch below the bottom of the intake or kinda flush with it?

Feel the block directly behind the intake, feel side to side, is there any noticable ridges?

You have a 351W, based on the D4AE-AA number you gave. you can confirm
this by looking at the lowermost bolt of the water outlet housing. If it's shrouded by the water pump/timing cover, and the only access to it is with a open-end wrench, it's a 302. If the lower bolt is accessible with a ratchet and socket assembly with the water pump/timing cover in place, it's a 351W.
Also look on the intake manifold where the firing order is cast into it: 351W has a firing order 13726548; 302 that year is 15426378.
