The engine on my 89 Bronco II cuts off sometimes after cranking backing up and than when you put in Dr it dies. Than it cranks up after one try or two tries. Temperature & how long driven makes no diff. I changed the fuel filter & no problem for 200 miles. No problems at high rpm, speed or exceleration. No codes. The fuel pressure regulator is only 6 months old. Haven't checked the fuel pressure as I am trying to find one at a fair price I can use on the shrader valves or an adapter where I can use one of my old gauages. Also I just switched from alcohol gas to non alcohol. Any ideas?? Do any of the parts places have pressure gauages they loan out???
Update. Cleaned the throttle plate to see if that would make any difference. Bronco II would than not start. Hear fuel pump running. Disconnected battery to reboot system, still no run but cranks ok. With engine off get a little 1 inch squirt of gas from shrader valve. With switch on get a 6 inch spray from shrader valve. Squirted some gas thru a vacum port to the upper manifold and the engine starts trying to run. Did this a few times with same results. Finally engine starts running normal. Turned off an recranked engine & drove up & down driveway with no problems. Does this sound like a faulty fuel pump???Anybody???
You really need to get a fuel pressure gauge and check the pressure. Do all the leakdown tests for the fuel pump as specified in your repair manual to isolate what part of the fuel system is actually malfunctioning...
Update. Ran fuel pressure tests and all were great. Pulled distributor so I could have ignition module checked. It checked ok. Replaced the cap & rotor as it was carboned & corroded internally.Got it all back together. After a few no starts it started. Has been running great. Drove it up and down a 200 ft drive way and than out in a country field. No problem. Cranked and drove it at least 15 times or more. RPMs up to 3500, no problem. Will take it later on the highway. Never had a dist cap do that before. The center button looked worn. About 28 K on the cap & rotor. I guess I should change them out at 20 K. I got 20 K on the distributors with points and thought you could get 30 K out of the newer systems with out points.
