I have an 04 F-250, 6.0, Lariat. CC, Fx4, and I have noticed a strange feel in the steering that seems to come and go. When turning sharply at slow speeds (ie parking lot, driveway) the steering seems to sort of "rub." I can feel it in the steering wheel. I was thinking it may be in the steering column itself. Sometimes I can hear it making a sound also.
I am sure the front hubs are not locked. It is a different feel than having the hubs locked on pavement. There are no popping sounds, just a low frequency rubbing feel/sound. "Grinding" would be too harsh of a desription. I can feel it more so than hear it.
It is only noticed when turning the wheel quickly. It seems to be more evident when it's hot outside. It doesn't always do it. It may happen for a couple weeks then disappear for a couple weeks.
Is there any way to lube the steering column? I took it to the dealer today and, of course, he could not duplicate the problem.
No problem, I know what you mean about the rub noise. I had the same thing on a Chevy pickup that I used to own and the dealer said it was the upper bearing in the column and he lubed it which helped for about 6 months. I will aim for them to replace the bearing considering there is only 300 miles on this truck.
Let me know what your dealer says. I have given up on mine.
Went to the dealer and they checked the truck. They heard the noise and at first thought it was a valve in the steering box. Then they thought it might be the steering stabalizer, then they came up with a Special Service Message.
18103 2004-2005 SuperDuty F-Series/Excursion - Steering Noise
Some 2004-2005 super duty F-Series and Excursion vehicles may exhibit a moan/grunt noise from the power steering when turning the steering wheel especially during left hand turns. The noise may sound like it is comming from the steering gear or the steering column area. Engineering is currently investingating this concern. Do not attempt to repair at this time, unless the source of the noise can be confirmed. Continue to submit concern reports and monitor OAISIS for updates
I had the exact same problem in my 03 F250. It always did it at low speeds and when I would turn it slowly. I took it to the dealer and they thought it just needed to be lubed. The lube did not help it. Next they checked the OAISIS and at the time there was nothing listed. They then replaced the power steering pump. Still groaning and rubbing. Finally, they replaced the whole steering gear and bingo not a single moan or groan since. I was actually amazed when I got back in the truck and pulled out of the dealer lot how much smoother and easier it seemed to steer, I guess it was gradually getting worse and I had not noticed it that much. I also noticed that before the gear replacement that my truck tended to wander a little and after the new gear no more wander. They replaced the gear back in May and it is still going great with no wander or noises.

Any ideas?
Same on my '04 F350 SRW regarding the intermittant steering "rub" or "friction vibration" in the wheel (as I would describe it).
I also have a "poping" in the front end as described in my other posts.
I have 2600 miles on my '04. Otherwise, a near perfect vehicle.
We shall see what my dealer says when I take it in for the first scheduled service next week. I'm giving them a "heads up" today that work other than an oil change needs to be done.
Well, it's been more than a month since the last post on this thread. Has anyone heard from their dealerships, or Ford updating the last? I just bought my 2004, so I am very interested. I had heard of steering problems in the F250 Superduty 4X4s and was searching when I found this thread.
My 04 makes a whining noise if I make a hard right turn while accelerating hard and I can feel a vibration too. It only has 5000 miles. I too have a clunk in the front end. I attribut the clunk to probably something to do with my leveling kit, but the steering noise has me baffled.
After about 3700 miles my steering "grind" has gone away.
The pop, clunk or in the front end when turning left or right and when negotiating uneven ground if turning is another issue that continues to plague me to no end.
It remains to be seen if other posts and topics here will give us insight to this other front end situation?
Some have posted in other threads about various fixes for the front-end pop or clunk when turning or negotiating uneven ground in a slow turn. (Right or left turn seems not to matter.)
Someone with acess to OASIS database and Ford TSB's might give us better insight on this. ......????????????
From these posts and others, this front end "pop or clunk" is a very common problem with Superduty 4x4' s manufactured in '04!!!!
I was told by my dealer and by responses on this forum that you are encountering the steering stops which prevent the wheels from rubbing against the springs.
