A friend told me today that she had heard that Ford is going to start making the Bronco again in 2006. I haven't heard this. Have any of you? If so, any details? I hope they don't mess up a good idea if they go ahead with this project.
Right now I believe it is just a concept but they were trying to get back to the early bronco style. Notice though it has Bronco on it in a few places but there is nor FORD badge on it anywhere.
The new Bronco looks nice but a turbo diesel engine, no way. Please Ford put a V8 into this baby.
I'd beg to differ with that opinion. We all love our V8 Bronco's of course, but the one topic that continually recurrs for discussion in this forum is the prospect of having a diesel under the hood for the sheer low-end torque and pulling power. In my humble opinion, dropping a turbo diesel into the Bronco would be an answered prayer for many who are looking for that kind of performance especially in the off-road capabilities.
The real drawback I can see to the concept is the flimsy, spindly, "Escape" derived drivetrain underneath. All that silly independent four wheel suspension will turn the new Bronco into nothing more than a "soccer-mom-cute-ute" that will be as incapable as the rest of the tiny useless SUV's out there today. If Ford is so hell-bent on re-introducing the Bronco, bring her back with the kind of capabilities the originals had right out of the showroom. The originals had a 9" rear and eventually a Dana 44 front. Try doing what those two axles can do with an Escape and see how far the truck goes!
If you find the specs on this Bronco, they suck. Below 200 HP and lousy ft/lbs in torque. Now if they up those numbers to be comparable to like the new V8's (300+ hp) or better...then I'll buy one. Diesel or not...it has to have enough hampsters to make it go and go good.
keep in mind thatthis concept is based on the Escape. much better-looking vehicle, but still kinda small. The 4x4 setup and engine are not designed to be the work-horses that the old ones were. Much like the H2, it is basically a kit car based on something less than what one would expect. The H2 is based very heavily on the Z71 Silverado / Sierra...
The necessity for copius amounts of torque like that produced by the V8's isn't there. The new concept is a harkening back to the ORIGINAL Bronco which was much smaller and much lighter than our full-size models. 200HP in something that weighs several hundred pounds LESS than a full-size truck will still perform quite well. I know we would all much rather see the full-size come back but this concept just isn't going for that. Say what you will, the idea of having a Diesel and Bronco finally come together in the same vehicle is a welcome idea. The first Bronco's (1966 models) were ONLY available with a 170 CID inline 6. I have driven these little beasties and while they aren't gonna be pulling any "dumptrucks out of ditches", they sure as heck are as capable on and off road as their later, larger, heavier, counterparts.
if they make it... i'm definely buying one... think it looks badass, and i would love to have a turbo diesel motor instead of a v8. better g.m., and when they developed an aftermarket, i'm sure you could really up the hp and torque numbers with an exhaust and chip kit. like greystreak said, the new bronco would be a crapload lighter than the original broncos... wouldn't complain if they put a nice 9" on it though.
