Replacing Speed Sensor

I have a '99 For Ranger.
2WD - 3.0L - V6 - Automatic Trans

Yesterday I was driving - it slipped from 3rd to 1st and my speedometer stopped working.

If I manually put it in 2nd gear, it goes just fine, but automatic will not change gears at all.

This coupled with the speedometer not working makes me think it's the speed-sensor.

I looked on the back of my tranny, and I do not see what I'm used to seeing (havent looked at one in a while). At the rear on the left side of the vehicle I see what looks like a large wiring harness (looks like the kind on the back of a car stereo) is this what I remove to change the speed sensor? or is it in another spot?

Any explanation as to where it is on the trans would be appreciated, I plan on changing it out tonight and I don't want to fumble and mess something up.

Thanks again!

Welcome to FTE!

The speed sensor on your '99 is located on top of the rear differential. Held on with one bolt, fairly easy to change.

So, there's just a device with a wiring harness plugged in? Can you get the sensor somewhere like AutoZone or is it a dealership part?

Just thought I'd post that I bought the sensor from the Ford dealership's parts dept for about $25.00, installed it and the truck drives like new. Shifting is smooth as glass and the ABS light is gone. The brakes seem to work a little better (feel), but that might just be me.

Thanks.

I have the VSS you need!. Mine went out, but the local Ford dealer sold me the worng one. My '99 is a Manual, so it won't work. You can buy it from me for $20...Cost me $45...
