i have a 2002 250 with the 7.3l, just wondering if i went with a new housing and a wicked wheel would it be about the same as buying a bigger turbo? will it be that big of a differance in perf? especially since what it would cost for a new turbo.
thanks
Well you know the old saying: "There's no replacement for DISplacement."
An 88mm turbo wheel will pump a lot more air than the stock 80mm.
Speed costs money. How fast do you want to go?

the WW is not made as a performance enhancment. it is designed to help stop turbo surge/stall. it will not increase performance and might even drop the boost a little bit. a ported turbo housing is designed to do the same thing but may yield you a little more power do to its 1" larger intake over the stock housing.
Ok, while we've got a thread open on turbos and wheels, can those that glass over this thread, and have either replaced or know firsthand of someone that replaces a wheel and/or turbo, throw in their two cents on:
1) Which wheels have been successful and which ones have been failures, and/or
2) Which replacement turbos have proven to be worth the money and which ones we should pass by.
Additional information, such as performance before/after, costs, lessons learned during the removal and exchange, etc., would also be greatly appreciated.
someone was trying to tell me that they make some kinda orcelain bearing for turbos that dont need any oil.. said the oil just makes drag and better off w/o it... anyone else heard this before?
ATS diesel is coming out with a new one soon supposed to be a monster with up to 60lbs of boost I am getting one as soon as they come out the only thing that I will need to do is 0-ring my heads and good to go.

I've done both.
1. The aftermarket wheel's are all essentially the same. The only real decision is who you want to have your money.
2. You really can't go wrong with either of the common replacements, those being the Garrett GTP-38R (ball bearing) and the Holset H2E. I choose the Garrett because it is a drop in replacement, and because it costs about $1000 less than the H2. The downside of the Garrett is there currently no rebuild parts available, and it's a little on the smallish side if high performance injectors are used.
Read here for a good tech. article on the wheel replacement (would also apply if installing the BB turbo)
Here's my 2¢ worth.
I just today installed the Swisher wheel from Dieselinnovations. It was to correct the compressor stall that I was having trouble with while pulling the trailer up a mountain pass. It would sound like a steam engine laboring - chuffa chuffa chuffa noise coming out of the intake. After I changed it I went out on the freeway and floored it. No more chuffa and a lot less exhaust flutter. That's the most mysterious part of it all. I changed the INTAKE wheel and it changes the exhaust note.
Anyway now when I step on the throttle it whines a good one just like a semi. Love the new sound.
