99 Ranger 3.0 feels like it is missing, especially when sitting still with ac running. Doesn't do it until the engine warms up. Upon acceleration it will hesitate, feels like it misses for a few seconds, then take off. A couple of times I have felt it bucking at highway speeds when RPM's are in low range (2500).
Couple of times I thought I smelled gasoline while sitting still. I have replaced the IAC, air filter, plugs, cleaned the MAF and throttle body with no results.
In my experience, if there were bad wires you could raise the hood while it's dark out and see if sparks are jumping from the wires. Not that it's a bad idea to go ahead and change wires, but if don't you want to replace them unless you have to, this may be one way to conclude if they are bad or not. Also, the last time I changed my plugs I had the same problem that you're describing. Turns out I'm not above cracking plugs when I put them in. This set off a code and Autozone was able to tell me exactly which cylinder was misfiring with they're little code-pulling gizmo. Just some food for thought. Good luck!
I really didn't think it would be the plug wires given this problem started with only 12k miles on the truck. But I changed the wires and so far the truck is running great! Wonder why the OEM wires went bad so fast. The truck did sit-up for a while, 99 with 8400 miles when I bought it last November. Appreciate the feedback. Saved me some bucks, and likely headaches! JJ
