Question Tranny Confusion

I have an '04 350CC, DRW, 6.0, torqueshift. To all accounts I believe this is a five speed, but it seems to upshift through six (6) gears!? What gives? I can repeate this any time I want and do it under constant acceleration so the rpms aren't dropping from a let off of the right foot.

The automatics are five speeds.

It does have six forward gears, I think 3rd or fourth gears have two different
ratios to choose from to optimize performance.

It is a six speed, only uses 5 at any given time.
1,2,3,4,6,
1,2,3,5,6,

I think that is correct...posted it a number of times and cannot find it...ug

Do a search on torqushift. I do believe the 5 speed has 6 gears. It does shift 5 times. Someone gave an explanation on it once.

the logic I hear is that it is 6 "gears" but is ony designated a 5 speed...
could the 6th "shift" be the lock-up when up to speed....

The rpms drop only about 200 or so on the first shift, about 500 on numbers 2,3,4 and then maybe a little more on the last shift, dropping to (vague memory on gauge) about 1800 for highway.

The torqueshift has 6 forward gears but only uses 5 normally. True 4th is 1.09 to 1 and true 5th is 1 to 1. The ratio difference of .09 makes true 4th not very useful. On upshifts true 4th is only used when the tranny temp is below (I believe) 40 degrees F. On downshift true 4th is available at all times and may be selected by the tranny computer if needed.

It upshifts 1,2,3,5,6, and then the torque converter locks. The lock is what you are feeling as the extra shift.

I thought I was the only one that noticed or even thought about this. My '01 7.3 X with the 4R100 seems to shift through 5 gears as opposed to 4.

I know this is a stupid question, but (sometimes they yield the best answers)
but would this same theory apply to the 4R100?

Here is the gearing for the TorqueShift:

1st: 3.09
2nd: 2.20 1st w/ overdrive

3rd: 1.538

4th: 1.09 3rd w/ overdrive for below 0 degrees

5th: 1.0

6th: 0.712

Reverse: 2.88:1

We use 2 reduced forward-speed gears (1st and 3rd), and combine those w/ the overdrive to produce two new ratios: 2nd and 4th. 5th gear is direct. 6th is the overdrive itself.

If you count shifts, and you count 6, you are not counting the six gears above. What you are seeing happen is about a 200 to 250 rpm reduction in 6th (Overdrive) gear, when the Torque Converter locks up. This occurs as your acceleration tapers off. The engine and impeller are spinning a bit faster than the turbine and transmission axle. Once lock up engages, the transmission is acting as a standard-manual mechanically linked transmission.

That's four gears plus the torque converter lockup, which feels like another shift.

No, it does not.
