I got this from a Ford tech: "it is a 6 speed trans but only 5 gears are used and converter lockup depending on temp and load the pcm choses what 5 gears it wants"
not sure i agree..... the small gear change/rpm change is 4th/5th. the converter lockup being talked about would happen in od, and would only account for about a 200 rpm drop, but i usually see a ~500 rpm drop in the last "shift".....
i have a theory ford changed the tranny in certain modes to use all 6 forward gears. they did away with tow/haul, pilot injection, and hood blankets, why not change their mind on shift stategy?
last, if i am wrong, and it is totally converter lockup, it would most certainly be applicable to the 4r100, as well as a 4r70w trans, as they have computer controlled lockup clutches inside their converters, just as the 5r110w does.
Do you mean they did away with Tow/Haul in the '05's? I have an '04, with an engine build date of Sept 8, 03 & a reflash Dec 22, 03. Thanks, Rick

With the latest flash, I can only get the tow/haul mode to lock the converter below 45. Some say it will lock in above that if you hit the brakes. I tried that and saw no difference. It has changed dramatically. You still have tow/haul, just not the way it was originally.
sorry, still has tow/haul, but those of us with 03's, that had original flashes when we got em (romping idle, smoke, zero power when cold, dead pedal) know what the tow haul was like, at any safe rpm, hold the brake pedal (no pressue, just turn the brake lights on) and it would downshift, sometimes HARD.
the tow haul on the trucks now is not even close....... mine does downshift every day at 55mph in the morning, going down a 8% grade, i hold the pedal light enough for the comp to know im on it, but not enough to slow the truck, rpm shoots to about 3500, and the truck actually slows down!
funny tho, that is the only hill it works on, no other time can i get the truck to DECELERATE in tow/haul....it will maintain speed, and not coast any faster, but n=will not slow down.
