Front Receiver Hitch for '91

I am looking to put a class III front receiver hitch on my 1991 F-250 4x4, and in searching around can only find one listed for 92-97 trucks. How different is the 92+ from the 87-91, as far as mounting one of these hitches? I wasnt aware that things had changed so much between 91 and 92. Might I be able to do this with slight modification or something?

Any light that could be shed is greatly appreciated...

I am unsure about the differences between 91 and 92 models. I would assume, however, that it must be something of importance, else the cataloging for the hitch you saw would show a greater year/model span.

It may have something to do with a front valence or the like. But, let me be honest, I am unsure.

I have a friend who works for Ford; I will try to ask him for you tomorrow, if that will be okay with you.

I forgot to add that, if it is acceptable to you or worth the effort in your estimation, you can get a Valley Hitch assembly which is to be welded and joined--as opposed to a bolt-on direct fit. This is for front or rear applications as well.

Valley also offers them through NAPA Balkamp. You could call 1-800-LET-NAPA to get the name and number of a store near you. Or, you could go online at www.napaonline.com.

Finally, you might wish to check www.motorhaven.com. As I understand it, their supplies are not limited to engine parts.

I hope this helps to some degree!

Have you tried the Reese Hitch manufacturer website to find a front hitch for your truck? Go to www.reeseprod.com and use their 'hitch finder' to see if they have one for your truck. Reese also manufactures Draw-Tite and Hidden Hitch, by the way. You can also locate a hitch at www.etrailer.com, that's where I got the front hitch for my F350.

Well, this is the response I got from Putnam, after asking about the FMR hitch they list for the 92-96 trucks...

"On this particular application, the main tube is shorter in the '92 than it
was in the '91. There is no easy way to accommodate the 24004 to fit your
truck."
Which is certainly not too encouraging. Reese seems to make hitches for everything but my application, and as far as I can tell Valley doesnt make the front mount hitches. DOes anyone know if Ford sells hitches for their vehicles? Maybe I will call up my local dealer...

I have an 87 and have been wanting to do this for a winch.

I know it's a matter of bottom line for manufacturers but sometimes it's like we don't exist to them.

I tried the Reese website and entered my year and make, fully expecting it to come back N/A for my year, which it did. What was interesting was the message "I'm sorry, our database does not have information for a Ford made in 1987. Please check that you have entered a valid year for that make."

For that make? I'm pretty sure they made my truck in 1987 since I have one. Actually I'm pretty sure Ford made a wide assortment of vehicles in 1987.

All kidding aside I have a friend who's a welder I'll just get a "universal hitch" and have him cobble it in.

I saw a brush guard somewhere that had a reciever hitch incorporated into it's design. I'm not sure what class of hitch it was but it's for newer trucks (and over-priced accordingly) anyway.

I don't believe the frame changed from 91' to 92' just the front was updated (sheet metal & grille). If you can order the hitch and see if it will bolt in, if it doesn't take it back. It would look alot better than a freind cobbling it in.

He's pretty skilled so it probably wouldn't be too shabby looking. Depending on the circumstances we may build one from scratch. He made me a rear bumber with a reciever hitch a decade ago and it was solid. As long as it's not sticking out everywhere and isn't weak, I'm not too worried about looks. Utility comes 1st.

It's an 87' with the standard rusty hood and a few small battle scars. It's my all purpose rig which usually (not always) disqualifies a vehicle from the beauty contest. It has an appeal to me that transends it's outward appearance.

Someday I'll give it a well earned facelift but only when I can afford to be a little frivolous and when there is a more immediate maintenance issue like rust.

I just saw this while searching for something else. I have 3 E350s. i have put a front reciever on each one. Curt/Reese and others make an adjustable width hitch that you can bolt to the frame rails and then the center piece slide into positon for the bolts to line up. not sure of the part #s.
