hitch reciever

This weekend we towed a 28 foot toy box with an one owner X. The receiver was very sloppy. I know this is a not a overly used reciever. Is the X receiver hitches just over sized?

Sloppy?...Do you mean when you insert the hitch bar (the part with the ball) into the receiver (the part fixed to the Ex), there is more play than you are used to?

There are products on the market that clamp to the receiver and thru a knurled nut with bolt...apply pressure to the hitch bar to stop wiggles...that may help...but I'm not sure of the load ratings on those things as I think they are designed for accessories like bike racks and such...

I tow a 9000# TT with 1100-1200#'s of tongue weight and while there is some play when I insert my hitch bar...I wouldn't call it any worse than any other receivers I've had.

I did notice my thru hole oblongating more than I'd like...that has been linked to the rounded part of the hitch pin...simple fix is to take a small hose clamp and put it right in the crook of the hitch pin...stops the pin from riding up and in and oblongating that hole...but I'd venture a guess you'd need a lot of oblongation before you got extreme play from that but take a look at the receiver thru holes...they may be grossly oblongated?...

Let us know what you mean by 'very sloppy' as my assumption is you mean in a static sense when you insert the hitch bar...but you may be meaning as you are traveling and have some movement behind you and you are thinking it is the hitch bar moving?...

Your right in your description. We used an equalizer hitch and the attachment that goes into the excursion has a lot of play, movement side to side and up and down. Not a obllong hole problem. I used the same equalizer hitch on my motorhome and I have problems getting it out of the reciever.

Does the hitch receiver hole measure 2" or 2-1/2"
and what does your ball mount measure?

we Have a reese DC set up and it does have a little play, but have never had problems towing. I do agree with previous post, make sure of the EQ is a 2inch or 2 1/2

Google "hitch vise"
Although I cannot say it cured my sloppiness, I am sure when it gets here it will
I ordered 2, regular and Ford style. Cheap too.

This is an interesting thread as I thot mine was the only one and wondered if anyone else had it..I am using the same hitch that I used on the suburban and it was a tad bit snug on that and also the shaft went farther into the hole. With the "X" it is looser and the hitch shaft goes about an inch or more less into the receiver so that when I put that 1k tongue weight of my trailer on,it really pulls down.. If it weren't for the fact that it is one hunk of metal,I'd be worried that it would bend the receiver and we'd have the same rpoblem some of the new chevy's have and that is that the receiver bends downward..

I had the same problem with the pin whole getting bigger and the hitch getting wider and more sloppy my solution bought a receiver that can be 2 inches and 2 1/2 inches and rated for 16,000 pounds and 3,000 tung weight

Do you mean you ran a bead of weld on the "ball and tongue" portion of the equalizer hitch that goes into the receiver on the back of the Excursion or the actual Excursion's reciever box inside corners?

If I do that to my equalizer's tongue I would not be able to use it in my motorhome receiver.

Yeah the hitch pin hole on my hitch is getting egg shaped too! My Dodge Mega Cab did the same thing! I wish they made hitches with a little bit tighter fit so there would be less movement of the receiver in the hitch! I am towing an 11k toy box and my hitch and receiver and pin are all the right size?

instead of the cheap bent 5/8 pin, you could always use a bolt, it provides better holding strength and will not wallow out the hole...or use the 5/8 locking mechanism, it is the bend that wrecks everything.

So far the hole for the hitch pin is not the problem.
